PMC-Sierra and Vativ to Create Interoperable DS3 Line Card Solution
4/27/2004 - PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS - News) and Vativ Technologies announced a marketing collaboration to deliver interoperable framer/mapper and line interface unit (LIU) devices for next-generation voice and data communications. The high density, multi-channel DS3 equipment line card solution is the industry's lowest power and highest performance framer/mapper and LIU solution currently available. The combination of PMC-Sierra's ARROW, SUNI® and TEMUX® framer/mapper product families and Vativ Technologies' VTE3 DS3 LIUs offer equipment makers a reliable solution to seamlessly upgrade existing infrastructures. A reference design is available that addresses metro transport, access and core markets applications.
"We are pleased to combine Vativ's best-of-breed multi-channel DS3 LIU solution with PMC-Sierra's broad range of integrated framer/mapper products to deliver the industry's lowest power and highest performance multi-channel LIU and framer solution for DS3 applications," said Sreen Raghavan, president and CEO at Vativ Technologies. "The combined solution dissipates less than 3.5W; half the power of competing solutions while delivering unparalleled performance. Vativ's LIU consumes just 75mW per channel in full-duplex operation which enables high port density designs without substantially increasing system power budgets."
"PMC-Sierra and Vativ Technologies' collaboration on the reference design offers our customers with the most optimized DS3 line card solution to address the Metro Transport, Router, and Multi-Service Switch markets," said Jean Lamarche, director of Marketing and Applications, Service Provider Division at PMC-Sierra. "OEMs upgrading existing or developing next-generation line cards have a complete, flexible, and reliable solution set with multi-rate, multi-mode devices that provide significant power and real estate savings."
PMC-Sierra's Portfolio of Framer/Mapper Products
PMC-Sierra provides a wide array of low power, highly integrated framer/mapper devices targeted at DS3/E3/STS-1 applications including metro transport, access and core markets as well as multi-service switching and routing.
- PM5385 ARROW 12xETEC: integrates 12 DS3/E3/STS-1E framers and can map them into an OC-12. The ARROW 12xETEC can also be used to convert 6 DS3/E3 streams into STS-1E streams.
- PM5320 ARROW 155: latest addition to PMC-Sierra's ARROW SONET/SDH family. The ARROW 155 has a SONET/SDH interface, 3-port DS3/E3/EC-1 interface on the line side, and a TelecomBus on the system side. An internal cross-connect provides flexibility by allowing all interfaces to communicate to one another. This device is pin- and software-compatible with the PM5319 ARROW 622, a multi-rate counterpart.
- PM5386 S/UNI 4xJET: a 4-channel DS-3/E3/J2 framer and ATM/bit-HDLC mapper. The S/UNI 4xJET's system side can be configured in UTOPIA or POS-PHY Level 2 or 3 modes allowing it to interface with readily available solutions including several PMC-Sierra ATM-layer S/UNIs. It is also pin- and software-compatible with the 12-channel PM5383 S/UNI 12xJET.
- PM8320 TEMUX 84E3: a 155 Mbit/s multi-channel T1/E1/J1 framer with integrated VT/TU, DS3/E3 mappers and M13 multiplexers. The TEMUX 84E3 conforms to the global PDH streams framing requirements which provides mapping and multiplexing capabilities.
Vativ Technologies' Advanced DSP-based Devices
Vativ Technologies' VTE3 DS3/E3/STS-1E LIUs achieve dramatic performance improvements over current "legacy" LIUs due to incorporation of proprietary DSP-based transceiver architecture. For example, the digital adaptive equalizer in the receiver enables the VTE3 device to recover DS3 signals over 3000 feet of coaxial cable (Type 734/738), exceeding the standards requirement by over 3 times. Additionally, the device includes programmability of the transmit pulse shape which results in added flexibility and robustness for system designers.
The VTE3-x LIUs provide customer with:
- Integrated DSP-base multi-channel LIU
- Independent transmit and receive jitter-attenuators (JAT)
- Error-free performance over 3000 feet of standard coaxial cable
- Programmable pulse shaping
- 75mW per channel
- 12 x 12 mm 144 PBGA
