4/23/2004 - Renesas Technology Corp., the world's number-one supplier of microcontrollers and a leader in security IC products announced the first ePOS (electronic point-of-sale) platform using Visa Smart POS and compliant with GlobalPlatform and EMV (Europay /Mastercard / Visa) standards. This architecture provides manufacturers of terminal devices with a single open-standard platform, enabling them to easily develop and update applications that run on a number of products to meet future security requirements. This single, scalable design reduces development time with complete application independence for rapid, secure rollout of new applications. It also reduces maintenance requirements and provides a Java-based development environment for accelerated design, resulting in a large reduction in total ownership cost.
Renesas Technology worked with Visa International to develop the ePOS platform to meet the needs of commercial transaction customers worldwide. Tests have verified that the hardware and software environment seamlessly incorporates the Visa Smart POS technology.
The Renesas ePOS solution combines a wide range of 16/32 bit microcontrollers and embedded security technology to provide enhanced security for electronic transaction systems. The combined security solution enables a fully integrated hardware/software design by utilizing the latest multi-chip packaging technology and providing an optimized top-tier board support package (BSP). Built upon a trusted security environment that incorporates proven Smart Card (IC) technology, the tamperproof hardware delivers security acceleration and robust anti-slamming control functions.
The Renesas ePOS platform supports open-software standards including GlobalPlatform/STIP, JEFF from J-Consortium and FINREAD. This makes it possible for OEMs and ODMs to quickly customize new applications remotely. Using this single, versatile platform from Renesas, terminal makers can develop a wide range of industry-compliant payment products. They can also easily migrate to current and future EMV and Visa Smart POS standards without increasing engineering, maintenance and ownership costs.
According to Jim Lee, senior vice president, Product Technology and Standards, Visa International, "There has been a growing requirement in the financial industry to standardize and streamline system implementation in accordance with the EMV specifications. The Renesas ePOS solution brings a new level of uniformity in terminal system implementation, facilitating the migration from magnetic stripe to smart card technology."
Sami Nassar, director and general manager of the advanced solutions group at Renesas Technology America, "As an industry leader in microcontrollers, security and Smart Card technologies, we are in the ideal position to boost the adoption of new security standards with our advanced open-standard architecture that successfully addresses the security and performance needs of next generation payment terminal devices."
The EMV initiative was developed to standardize the next generation of smart card security in order to better combat fraud within the electronic financial transaction industry. The EMV specification provides the flexibility and convenience of an open platform to facilitate the seamless transition from today's magnetic stripe card readers to the more secure Smart Card-based reader design, while also ensuring interoperability for electronic systems and payment processing. Renesas ePOS is available directly from Renesas' sales offices.
