4/22/2004 - Sun Microsystems, the creator and leading advocate of Java(tm) technology, announced that it is expanding its relationship with Vodafone, the world's largest mobile carrier. Vodafone has selected java.com to be a complimentary showcase for its Vodafone live! German language content catalog which will showcase the Java technology-based games available for its German market. (A catalog for Vodafone live!'s UK market was launched on java.com at the end of 2003.) Over seven million visitors worldwide per month now enjoy java.com as a central point of access to all types of Java applications including popular mobile games such as Pac Man, EA SPORTS Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2004, Tomb Raider: Osiris Codex Tomb Raider and to get the latest Java technology information.
"We are excited to extend our current collaboration with the world's leading carrier into other markets and to offer the latest cool Vodafone live! games and content for the mobile Java gaming enthusiast," said John Loiacono, executive vice president of software, Sun Microsystems. "Vodafone live! leverages the dynamics that Java technology brings to mobile applications û security, ubiquity, and performance. The Java platform continues to prove its value to carriers, developers and consumers through record deployments and downloads."
The German showcase on java.com will start with 35 games and joins Vodafone live! UK which features 120 games. The German catalog is anticipated to include more than 200 Java applications by the summer of 2004.
Since the launch of java.com, the site has enjoyed tremendous success. There have been more than 37 million downloads of the Java desktop runtime. Java.com has seen unprecedented growth with more than one million new visitors added per month from more than 260 countries.
As the leading consumer site for Java technology, third parties working with java.com have found it a very successful way to reach Java technology consumers. Not only is it a highly trafficked showcase of mobile and desktop applications, it is the only site in the industry where consumers can download the free Java plug-in for the desktop with support for Windows, Linux and Macintosh desktops as well as the Solaris[tm] Operating System (OS).
