PowerDsine Introduces PD67000 Power over Ethernet DIMM Family

4/21/2004 - PowerDsine®, a pioneer of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, announced availability of its new PD67000 Power over Ethernet DIMM family, based on its PD64012 PoE Manager. The PD67000 family of products enables switch designers to quickly and easily PoE-enable their new and existing lines of Ethernet switches, potentially saving time and money, while retaining the flexibility of using the same switch for PoE and non-PoE implementations.

The new PowerDsine PD67000 family, in comparison to previous generations, reduces the number of PoE modules required for a 48- port solution from seven to two, enabling a single switch design to support 12, 24, 36 or 48 ports, with minimal space requirements.

"The PD67000 family of products complements PowerDsine's new generation of PoE products, by enabling a design of a field upgradeable Power over Ethernet solution, which is scalable from 12 to 48 ports, in a similar fashion to memory DIMMs. This enables customers a rapid time-to-market for multiple switch platforms," said Igal Rotem, CEO and Co-Founder at PowerDsine Ltd.

Technology Advantages
PowerDsine PD67000 PoE DIMM family has three members, which work on a master/slave architecture: the PD67024M, a 24-port master DIMM, the PD64024S, its slave 24-port counterpart, and the PD67012M 12-port PoE master DIMM. All the members in the PD67000 family are based on the PD64012 PoE Manager and are fabric pre-tested for PoE functionality.

Since the PD67000 family members have a common pinout, they can be interchanged seamlessly, enabling switch vendors to create a common design for different port counts, potentially saving research and development time and money, and simplifying the manufacturing process. Mechanically, all PowerDsine's DIMM's conform to the popular 168-pin JEDEC MO-161f standard, assuring customers find several cost-effective slot options.

For users, this means that vendors will be able to offer field upgradeable stackable switches, and to add PoE functionality to blades on modular switches, instead of replacing them altogether.

Product Availability
Samples of the PD67024M, PD67012M and the PD67024S PoE DIMMs are immediately available. Production for shipment is expected to commence during the second quarter 2004. The modules are fully IEEE 802.3af-2003 compliant, as well as capable of powering pre-standard proprietary solutions.

About Power over Ethernet Technology
PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary to operate each device, to be carried by data cables rather than by power cords. It minimizes the number of wires that must be strung in order to install the network.

PoE also potentially reduces the cost of installing end devices such as IP (internet protocol) phones and wireless LAN access points. Because the network switches also can deliver power through the standard Ethernet infrastructure, the need to connect each IP phone or wireless LAN access point to a separate electrical circuit and install additional AC power outlets is eliminated. Also, PoE can provide customers with uninterruptible power for critical applications such as IP (Internet protocol) phones, security cameras, entry loggers and other powered data terminals.
