Tektronix Unveils HDTV Analyzer with Multi-Format Capability

4/21/2004 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced significant enhancements to its successful high-definition television (HDTV) Automated Video Signal Analyzer. These enhancements provide manufacturers with more functionality and enable them to speed product verification and simplify widespread deployment.

With rapid consumer acceptance of advanced display technologies, advanced formats for broadcasting video content and with the installed base of legacy televisions, equipment manufacturers must assess and control the video quality for devices that output a variety of signal formats, including standard definition (SD), Progressive and HDTV. Addressing these and other needs, Tektronix' VM5000 platform now offers flexible configuration via SD and HD options, additional measurement parameters and new timesaving test utilities. These additions make the VM5000 the most comprehensive automated solution available today for component analog signal analysis.

"Video applications are becoming more pervasive in consumer electronics as demand continues to rise for new video-enabled gear," said Todd Biddle, Vice President, Video Product Line, Tektronix, Inc. "This positive trend requires video equipment manufacturers to be equipped with design tools that provide automated, repeatable results. With the addition of SD capability to Tektronix' proven VM5000HD Analyzer, designers and manufacturers now have a complete solution for SD and HD product testing that generates reliable results and will be accepted by suppliers and customers alike."

The VM5000 is the ultimate solution for testing component analog video signals; it is capable of testing SD (480i, 480p, 576i and 576p) and HD (720p, 1080i and 1080p) video formats to user selected tolerance limits delivering fully automated, go/no go results. Equipped with high-speed signal acquisition hardware, optimized video measurement algorithms, and an integrated, high performance oscilloscope, the VM5000 offers unmatched performance and flexibility for users testing modern consumer digital television (DTV) reception and play-out devices.

The VM5000 measurement set identifies common component signal impairments, ensures operability with connected display devices, and reliably assesses video parameters proven to correlate with video signal fidelity. Measurement parameters include sync amplitude and timing, levels, noise, frequency response, non-linearity, transient response and inter-channel timing.

Test performance is further aided by the availability of a matrix test signal package that simplifies signal generation by utilizing Tektronix' base-band analog and digital generators or MPEG players. Current VM5000HD owners can easily upgrade their existing instruments to the new software capabilities of the VM5000. The VM5HDUP Option SD upgrade kit not only adds SD format support but also upgrades the HD test utilities to the latest revision offered with new instruments.
