4/20/2004 - Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRBA) announced that Select Comfort Corporation (Nasdaq: SCSS), the nation's leading bed retailer, is using Marimba to manage and protect computer systems across its more than 345 nationwide stores. Marimba allows Select Comfort to centrally manage its software IT assets, and increase security across its IT organization.
Prior to choosing Marimba, Select Comfort used a competing software management solution but found it was not able to effectively manage systems located in remote plants and stores. When an application or virus pattern update was required a cumbersome update process was necessary, often requiring technicians to manually patch the systems. This quickly became time and cost prohibitive. In 2003, Select Comfort evaluated nearly a dozen software management products before selecting Marimba for its security patch management capabilities. Unlike other vendors, Marimba provides inherent security that is not reliant on components vulnerable to outside attack. In addition, Marimba provides automated software distribution, and comprehensive inventory collection and analysis.
"Our infrastructure is distributed across shopping malls, remote offices, and plants around the country, with plans for more store expansion," said Rick Larson, Director of Technical Services for Select Comfort. "We needed a comprehensive solution to manage and protect PCs in each of our stores and remote offices, and we needed one that didn't rely on Windows IIS and .NET components. After evaluating various software management vendors, we determined that Marimba had the most proven, flexible and reliable software management solution."
Marimba for Software Change and Configuration Management
Marimba offers an infrastructure that gives customers dynamic control of their IT resources by automating the delivery, installation, and management of applications, operating systems and patches across their enterprise. Marimba provides customers with enhanced capabilities for easier management of software and security patch distribution, operating system migrations, license compliance, and IT asset tracking. With Marimba's policy-based architecture, administrators view a unified dashboard that illustrates the state of Select Comfort's environment, providing the ability to drill down to diagnostic information and take immediate, automated corrective actions.
Larson added, "The administrative costs associated with manually updating systems is about $45,000 per incident. With Marimba, we'll have the ability to prevent virus attacks by proactively deploying patches - rather than waiting for an attack to occur and then patch. Additionally, through its policy compliance, we'll know in near real-time how compliant our systems are with a patch deployment."
In addition, Select Comfort will replace its current software tracking system with Marimba's Software Usage solution to track software utilization across the company. With this added capability, Select Comfort will be able to identify and collect detailed information on software applications installed, and take action to help ensure license compliance and avoid overspending for unnecessary software licenses, maintenance, and support.
Larson continued, "Accurately tracking software licenses and usage and determining if they are over- or under-licensed is important. Marimba's Software Usage solution will allow us to compile detailed statistics about installed applications and then use that data to gain immediate savings in licensing and maintenance fees for our organization, as well as reducing risks associated with license compliance."
"Marimba has a proven track-record in the retail sector," said Rich Wyckoff, president and CEO of Marimba. "Select Comfort evaluated a number of competing management solutions and chose Marimba to be an integral part of their strategy to automate security patch management and software change management across the enterprise."
