Tek Helps Cypress Create Quad Independent Channel HD/SD Transceiver

4/19/2004 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced Cypress Semiconductor, a world leader in point-to-point physical layer devices, has selected its signal generation and monitoring tools to validate the industry's first quad-channel transceiver to enable both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) video applications simultaneously.

A diversified, broadline supplier of high-performance integrated circuits for network infrastructure and access equipment, Cypress created the first silicon device to enable the transmission and reception of four totally independent channels of multiple video protocols. The project required the production of video chips that meet both SMPTE-259M (270Mbps) and SMPTE-292M (1.485Gbps) digital television broadcast speeds, as well as the DVB-ASI (270Mbps) video transport standard. Cypress has chosen the Tektronix WFM700M multi-format waveform monitor and Tektronix TG2000 precision signal generation platform to test and validate its new HOTLink II transceiver.

"Many of our customers use Tektronix instruments to test their products. By using the same test tools, we can assure our customers that our quad independent channel HOTLink II devices will perform well in their systems and produce the results they expect during their test processes," said Erin Kettwig, Product Manager, Cypress Semiconductor. "The WFM700M and TG2000 have produced a high level of comfort and validation of our devices among our customers; Tektronix instruments provide a virtual stamp of approval above and beyond SMPTE standards compliance."

"Cypress' use of Tektronix' video test equipment demonstrates how our instruments are leveraged throughout the entire video development lifecycle, from silicon devices to end-user products," said Todd Biddle, Vice President, Video Product Line, Tektronix. "Cypress' choice to use the WFM700M and TG2000 for validation of the industry's first quad independent channel transceiver to incorporate both standard and high definition video formats concurrently is a testament to Tektronix' leadership in the video test market."

Together, the WFM700M and TG2000 provide a comprehensive toolset for generating, acquiring, and analyzing video signals to ensure the HOTLink II transceiver's compliance with SMPTE and DVB-ASI standards. The WFM700M's advanced jitter demodulation and measurement capabilities are vital for verifying SMPTE compliance, with the ability to display a trace of video-correlated jitter vs. time and measure peak-to-peak time jitter in the active display. The instrument contains four high-pass filters with various cutoff frequencies to isolate low, medium and high frequency jitter. The WFM700M is also able to measure the temporal jitter of a selected line, providing greater precision than waveform monitors that only measure field jitter.

The TG2000 enables Cypress to generate real video data signals and test SMPTE test patterns with exceptional accuracy. It also provides the ability to introduce pathological symptoms into the data stream to test the HOTLink II Transceiver's tolerance to jitter and other real-world anomalies.

About WFM700 Series Waveform Monitors and TG2000 Signal Generation Platform
The Tektronix WFM700 series multi-format, multi-standard waveform monitors offer the monitoring and measurement capabilities needed in the production, post-production, distribution, and transmission of HD and SD digital video and audio content. With specialized Diamond, Arrowhead and Lightning gamut monitoring displays, session and status screens, a user-configurable multi-mode display, and eye and jitter measurements configurable for full field or line select, the WFM700 series provides users with the powerful tools to enable quick error detection. For mixed HD/SD environments, the multi-format WFM700A provides the tools needed to perform such operational monitoring tasks as checking signal validity and content quality, setting levels, and verifying signal paths. The WFM700HD offers an HD-only version of these same capabilities. The WFM700M offers all the capabilities of the WFM700A plus the digital analysis capabilities important in the design, installation and maintenance of digital video systems, including eye, jitter, and data measurements for both HD and SD formats. With available digital audio monitoring support, the capabilities of any WFM700 can be expanded to monitor both digital video and up to eight channels of AES/EBU embedded or non-embedded audio in a single instrument.

A multi-format, precision signal generation platform, the TG2000 is designed for the most demanding test applications. It provides reference quality test signals, stressing functions in both the analog and digital domains, and the flexibility to address user-defined testing requirements.
