4/14/2004 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS), a leader in enterprise storage ICs, announced its first products aimed at the rapidly emerging Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Storage market. Analysts and industry insiders alike expect SAS to replace parallel SCSI within the next three years and become the most widely used protocol for enterprise server and large-scale storage applications.
This extensive Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) expander offering – NexSAS – is targeted at both enterprise-class server and storage enclosure applications, and is the latest family in the Vitesse storage portfolio to address the needs of systems OEMs with standards-compliant, feature-rich, high-performance solutions.
Designed to meet the needs of the leading companies deploying SAS-based products over the next 12 months, the NexSAS line of expanders provides a scaleable, non-blocking switching architecture. The platform delivers a common IC solution framework applicable to a wide variety of system configurations and applications, maximizing OEM return on both hardware and software investments.
Four innovative products (VSC7149 , VSC7150, VSC7151, and VSC7160) comprise the initial release of SAS ICs from Vitesse – with higher density expanders, mux/demux devices, signal-conditioning components, stand-alone serializers/deserializers/encoders, and discrete enclosure management processors close behind.
Four Distinct SAS Expander Products – One Scaleable Architecture The VSC7150, a 12-port SAS Edge Expander operating at 1.5 and/or 3.0 Gbps forms the foundation of the new product line. By leveraging 15 years of long haul signaling expertise, 7 years of serial data communication R&D, and one of the most widely adopted enterprise enclosure management solutions on the market today, the VSC7150 and its derivatives, lead the industry supporting deployment of native SAS and mixed SAS/SATA applications.
Features of the NexSAS family include:
The VSC7149, a 9-port SAS Edge Expander, and the VSC7151, a 6-port SAS Edge Expander, deliver the same features as the VSC7150, but with reduced port counts. Both are targeted at the entry-level server and workstation applications where power, cost, and space are critical factors in system design.
To provide complete solutions for storage systems architectures, Vitesse also offers the VSC7160 and derivative expander products specifically designed for blade-server, server expansion chassis, and storage enclosure applications where cascadability/multi-expander interconnect is required to achieve large drive densities or specific system performance metrics. The VSC7160 SAS Expander leverages the architecture and technology base from the VSC7150 server-series line, plus adds enclosure-centric features that include high performance, single-cycle lookup table routing, and an integrated SSP engine for in-band SCSI Enclosure Services (SES).
Supporting the entire product offering is a comprehensive, cross-platform suite of enclosure management applications, firmware, and development tools that build on the widely adopted Vitesse enclosure management architecture, providing maximum reuse of applications developed by system OEMs in a forward-compatible environment.
“Offering more features and flexibility than competing expander solutions, the NexSAS family of expanders defines the price/performance benchmark in the enterprise server and storage enclosure arena,” said Bob Cutter, vice president and general manager of the Storage Products Division at Vitesse. “Our continued leadership in design methodology, innovative development, and commitment to re-use ensures that we will continue to exceed customer requirements for complete enterprise storage IC solutions.”
