4/12/2004 - Systran Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Curtiss-Wright Controls, Inc. and the originator of the Serial FPDP protocol and developer of the FibreXtreme Serial FPDP data link, further extended the reach of their SL100/SL240 Serial FPDP connections to up to 50 kilometers. This increases the original connection distance by 500%. This enables designers of radar systems, targeting systems and other sensor-to-processor systems to dramatically increase the physical separation of the sensor and the digital signal processor (DSP) system for safety and increased system reliability.
Serial FPDP (ANSI/VITA 17.1-2003), is a logical extension of FPDP (Front Panel Data Port), a parallel connection technology often used in sensor-to-processor systems. FPDP has one major limitation; the sensor's Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) must be located within the one meter maximum cable length of FPDP. It is often desirable to locate the ADC as close as possible to the sensing unit, which may be located more than one meter from the DSP system. FibreXtreme cards, utilizing Serial FPDP, now extend the reach of FPDP up to 50 km while retaining its simplicity, bandwidth and reliability.
FibreXtreme SL100/SL240 data links are second-generation Serial FPDP products, providing sustained data throughput at up to 247 MB/sec, built-in bi-directional capability and support for various point to-point, broadcast and master ring topologies.
FibreXtreme interfaces are designed for use in advanced DSP systems and other environments where data transmission from the source to the processor requires very high bandwidth connections. The protocol's extremely low overhead allows utilization of over 99% of its potential bandwidth, providing sustainable and continuous high-speed data streaming. FibreXtreme cards are available in a variety of configurations, including a VME6U carrier and Common Mezzanine Card (CMC) capable of directly translating parallel FPDP data streams into Serial FPDP for long-distance transmission. These cards are link compatible with FibreXtreme PCI, CompactPCI(R) and PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC). Media connectors are available in copper and 850nm, 1300nm, and 1550nm. FibreXtreme cards are available in a standard COTS configuration, two rugged COTS configurations and in conduction cooled configurations.
