Sun, IFS Defense Target Aerospace and Defense Organizations

4/2/2004 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and IFS Defense have joined forces to deliver an advanced logistics platform of software and hardware to Aerospace and Defense (A&D) organizations. Already customers such as Lockheed Martin and BAE SYSTEMS have implemented solutions based on Sun and IFS technology. The advanced logistics solution includes fully integrated business and asset management modules that support complex configuration management and maintenance requirements found within air, land and sea environments.

The solution consists of IFS applications, running on Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System and the Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS). The Java Enterprise System is the strategic underpinning of Sun's software strategy and provides an integrated, open software system. Sun and IFS Defense will jointly demonstrate the advanced logistics solution during IFS World Conference, March 28-31, Orlando, Fla.

The Sun and IFS Defense solution is designed to reduce costs, streamline processes and facilitate collaboration throughout the value chain from design and conception to asset disposal. The solution is built on standards-based technologies, and provides a stable, secure foundation upon which customers can exchange information. This foundation provides a basis for strategic business decisions while providing access to long-term flexibility, stability and innovation for their technology.

"In today’s global defense environment," commented Simon Dowler, CEO, IFS Defense, "companies need to find ways to free up working capital and reduce costs. IFS Defense will provide its unique component-based solution on Sun's integratable, open software system to improve efficiency and drive down costs through universal, real-time access to extended supply chain and product data anytime, anywhere."

Peter Meinel, vice president of Market Development, Sun Microsystems, "A deeper technology alliance is the foundation for delivering the level of flexibility and dependability that defense organizations need to run a more lean operation while meeting rigorous compliance regulations. Running on the Sun Java Enterprise System and the scalable Solaris OS, the IFS and Sun defense solution provides rapid, adaptive deployment of services and secure sharing of data across disparate information systems."

IFS component-based applications support the management and control of defense assets, programs and resources throughout their lifecycles. A library of A&D specific components for project tracking, product data management and advanced/complex MRO addresses the needs of the army, navy and air force as well as the organizations that support them. The solution offers support for providers of contractor logistics support (CLS) and performance based logistics (PBL) to meet the needs of maintenance, repair and overhaul service providers and outsourcers.

Bringing the best in Java Web and application services together, Suns Java Enterprise System unleashes the scalability and integratability of IFS Applications and supports its modularity in full. Sun and IFS have demonstrated near linear scalability and performance up to 15,000 simultaneous users or 390,900 business transactions per hour for IFS Applications running on Sun Fire(TM) servers. This breakthrough performance achievement is the result of a strong engineering alliance and long-term commitment from Sun and IFS.
