VDC Expects Wireless Operator Interface Terminals to Grow by 53.3%

4/2/2004 - According to a report by Venture Development Corporation on wireless monitoring and control products in discrete & manufacturing processes, portable wireless operator interface (OI) terminal shipments are expected to grow to over $80 million by year-end 2005 (a compound annual growth rate of 53.3%).

Portable wireless operator interface terminals, which include notebook computers, hand held computers, PDAs, tablets and wearable OI terminals, offer significant advantages in mobile programming, maintenance and repair applications compared to their fixed/stationary counterparts.

VDC's analysis of the wireless monitoring and control market included telephone and Web surveys of current and potential end users and OEMs. These two user groups cited significant advantages of implementing portable wireless OI terminals:

  • Allows personnel to move around a machine and throughout a plant
  • Allows for more efficient and cost-effective maintenance and repair of plant machinery
  • Faster detection and rectification of faults reduces downtime and lowers total cost of ownership
  • Ability to remotely monitor and control operations and processes without personnel present saves time, labor and travel costs
  • Savings on hardware costs by implementing lower cost solutions (for example, PDAs) in situations that require less hardware functionality
