Accelerated Unveils Three USB Class Drivers for Nucleus Product Family

4/1/2004 - Accelerated Technology®, the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT), announced several new class drivers for the Nucleus® USB software, which provides Universal Serial Bus (USB) support for the Nucleus Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). The newly supported USB class drivers are the Human Interface Device (HID), Printer and Virtual Serial class drivers. All Nucleus USB class drivers are designed so that developers can speed their time to market and focus on adding value to their core product rather than writing the source code for the drivers themselves.

USB is a plug-and-play interface, traditionally between a computer and an add-on peripheral device, and it is rapidly being adopted in the embedded market space. With USB, it is not necessary to cycle the power or reboot when a USB peripheral device is plugged in. USB can replace several other types of cables including serial and parallel cables to offer a higher data transfer rate of 12 megabits per second (USB 1.1) or up to 480 megabits per second (USB 2.0). The new HID, Printer and Virtual Serial class drivers have all been released for use with both the Nucleus USB host stack and the Nucleus USB function (peripheral device) stack which are both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compliant.

The Nucleus USB HID class driver enables developers to build HID-compliant USB hosts that can interact directly with HID peripheral devices such as a mouse and keyboard. The HID host application graphical user interface (GUI) can be easily developed by utilizing the Nucleus GRAFIX graphics software which allows embedded developers to build powerful GUI applications that can be navigated with off-the-shelf keyboards and mice.

The Nucleus USB Printer class driver supports both USB hosts and USB peripheral devices; in this case a printer. As a host, the USB printer class driver could enable devices such as a set-top box to interact with and control different USB-compliant printers for printing.

The Nucleus USB Virtual Serial class driver is a vendor-specific USB class driver created by Accelerated Technology. It enables legacy serial applications to be easily migrated to USB in order to gain the higher data transfer rate provided by the Universal Serial Bus.

Availability and Pricing
The Nucleus embedded software is licensed with source code and without royalty fees. Available now, licenses for the Nucleus USB software start at U.S. $14,995 and licenses for the class drivers begin at $2,995. For more information, please contact Accelerated Technology at 800-468-6853 or
