M-Systems, Emblaze to Develop Embedded Security Multimedia Processors

4/1/2004 - M-Systems' (Nasdaq: FLSH) Fortress Security Division, cryptographic and data encryption specialists, and Emblaze Semiconductor, an Emblaze Group company (LSE: BLZ) and a leading provider of mobile multimedia application processors, announced that the Companies are cooperating to develop embedded security solutions for next generation multimedia processors for the mobile market.

As part of this agreement, Emblaze will integrate M-Systems' SuperMAPTM cryptographic coprocessors, software protocols and application program interfaces (APIs) into its next generation semiconductor products, which Emblaze will manufacture and make available to the mobile industry.

"As the capabilities of handsets become more complex, so do the security needs. Content providers want to secure rights (DRM) preventing copying and illegal usage, m-commerce requires secure transactions and network wireless access requires VPN-like connections. Additionally, the carriers are looking to secure expensive handsets from theft and code manipulations," said Uzi Breier, CEO, Emblaze Semiconductor. "Our collaboration with M-Systems on a highly secure handset architecture provides the device security, DRM and secure connections to meet these strong market demands while keeping power consumption low and preserving high multimedia performance."

M-Systems' SuperMAP family of low power cryptographic coprocessors implements sophisticated public key cryptography such as RSA and Elliptic Curve (with single step multiply and divide), as well as conventional symmetrical data encryption and data hashing algorithms. These patented, unique cores execute cryptographic functions in hardware while being driven by software, offering optimal security, performance, size and power consumption levels. Setting some of the highest standards in the secure-chip industry, M-Systems' SuperMAP products are embedded in millions of smart cards sold worldwide for applications such as mobile SIM cards, banking, the Internet, interactive TV and m-commerce.

Building upon its success within these markets, the newest generation of SuperMAP is optimized to secure content and communication within baseband and application chipsets for the consumer, mobile and cellular markets. It is designed for use within a wide variety of mobile applications, such as wireless application protocol (WAP) browsers, MP3 players, games, micro-payments, virtual private networks (VPNs), secure booting and secure storage on mobile handsets. SuperMAP supports initiatives such as digital rights management (DRM), content protection for removable media (CPRM), secure sockets layer (SSL), wireless transport layer security (WTLS), and soon Internet protocol security (IPsec) and Java mobile information device profile (MIDP) 2.0.

"We are excited that Emblaze has chosen our coprocessors together with the protocol & API layers to assist them in developing secure products and welcome this partnership to illustrate our value within the mobile market," said Dan Dariel, manager of M-Systems' Fortress Security Division. "More than just licensing our IP, this agreement with Emblaze represents a significant security partnership that implements a 'trusted handset architecture' so desperately needed within the mobile market."
