Wireless Operators Save $100 Million with NMS' Access Gateway

4/1/2004 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), trusted supplier of communications products and services, announced the results of business cases and trials with three operators using the company's AccessGate wireless access gateway. Introduced in May of 2003, AccessGate was shown to dramatically lower operating expenses by reducing the number of radio access network leased lines. Given the success of initial trials, the product is projected to save these operators more than $100M in backhaul expenses during the first year of use.

  • Network tests for a major European operator project annual savings of tens of millions of dollars enabled by reducing high priced STM1 and E3 links, as well as many E1 links throughout the network
  • All business cases showed very aggressive ROI, with most well within 12 month payback, while a South American carrier experienced similarly significant results, with ROI achievable in under 6 months, based on network topology and backhaul pricing
  • Based on EDGE wireless data rollout plans, greater than 30 percent annualized savings are projected for major operators who would otherwise require new dedicated links to support high speed data backhaul

"Operators today face significant challenges – staying profitable in a challenging economy while cost-effectively rolling out new networks and next-generation services. The early success of our AccessGate trials proves that a minimal investment – with quick payback – allows operators to take action now to reduce operating costs and pave the way for the introduction of new, revenue-generating high speed wireless data services," said Jacob Guedalia, vice president and general manager, NMS' Network Infrastructure business.

AccessGate not only reduces network operating costs in today's TDMA and GSM networks; it also reduces the expense associated with deploying and operating high speed wireless data networks, enabling increased ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) from new data service offerings. AccessGate also preserves call quality, with less than 9 milliseconds maximum end-to-end latency, three times lower than the next closest competitive technology.

NMS' AccessGate works in conjunction with an operator's existing radio access and mobile switching office (MSO) equipment. The gateway uses aggregation and NMS' breakthrough bandwidth reduction techniques that maximize network utilization and reduce leased line costs by as much as a 2:1 ratio.
