Multi-Tech Introduces Universal Socket Connectivity Initiative
3/31/2004 - Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading data communications technology company based in suburban Minneapolis, announces its Universal Socket Connectivity initiative at this year’s Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. Information about the initiative can be obtained at exhibit number 1138 in the Moscone Convention center from Tuesday March 30 through Thursday April 1. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage designs tailored to accommodate multiple connectivity requirements by providing developers information necessary to look at flexible ways to plan products. With this approach, connectivity needs can smoothly migrate through technologies such as wired modem, Ethernet LAN, ISDN, and cellular wireless.
“Common elements in modern product designs include microprocessors, memory and micro-code. To support these types of designs at customer locations, organizations have to be able to upgrade the firmware in the micro-controller” states Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. “From the marketing and support side there is often just pressure for new designs to be able to get connected, and not on how it is to be done. It is up to the design engineer to make sure it is done for today’s needs as well as tomorrow’s evolving requirements. The mission of our Universal Socket Connectivity initiative is to reach out to the embedded development community early in the design process and offer an innovative approach to providing several ways to connect to their product.”
With Multi-Tech’s Universal Socket Connectivity using analog SocketModem, wireless SocketModem, SocketEthernet, SocketModem ISDN, and selected IP variations, designers can prepare for several connectivity options depending on the operating environment needs. The developer’s guide that accompanies Multi-Tech’s embedded products assists the design engineer in considering SocketModems used to connect to different networks. This information will help engineers accommodate the different options that they need to consider for current as well as future requirements. In addition to the usual mechanical, electrical, and software specifications, the developer’s guide also includes information regarding connecting to communications networks, components used for connections, cables, and EMC filtering. Multi-Tech embedded products include:
- The SocketModem creates communications-ready devices by integrating data/fax functionality into a single product design. The SocketModem provides the controller, data pump and data access arrangement (DAA) in one module. It is a complete ready-to-integrate, space efficient (1” x 2.5”) embedded modem that provides 56K/V.92 (or below) communications.
- The SocketModem IP embeds Internet protocols inside any device allowing it to send and receive data over the Internet without connecting to a PC, router, or gateway server. The space efficient (1” x 2.5”) embedded modem integrates 56K/V.92 modem functionality and a complete TCP/IP protocol stack into a single product design. It sends and receives data, voice and images via email, HTTP or socket interfaces.
- The SocketModem GSM/GPRS and SocketModem CDMA are complete, ready-to-integrate, embedded cellular wireless modems. They provide the controller, RF transceiver, and antenna interface in one space efficient module (3.1” x 1.4”). Designed for global use, they offer standards-based multi-band GSM/GPRS Class 10 and CDMA2000 1xRTT performance.
- The SocketEthernet IP is a complete ready-to-integrate serial-to-Ethernet module for connecting legacy devices to an IP network for remote monitoring, control and configuration. The space efficient module (1” x 2.5”) provides a high performance Ethernet bridge as well as a complete TCP/IP protocol stack.
- The SocketModem ISDN is a complete ready-to-integrate embedded ISDN modem available in 1B+D and 2B+D models. The space efficient modules (1” x 2.5”) provide ML-PPP, PPP, V.120 and X.75 B-channel protocols, synch or async operation, serial speeds up to 230K bps, 4-wire S/T interface, and 3.3 or 5 volt capabilities.
