3/31/2004 - Enea Embedded Technology, a leading provider of operating system solutions for the communications market, announced that SPIDCOM Technologies has chosen the OSE real-time operating system for the development of their new powerline communications technology FLIP (Flexible Powerline). This new technology enables high-speed, low-cost Internet access over medium and low voltage, and home networking (high definition video and sound, data transfer, VoIP) via 220V/110V power lines.
FLIP Technology targets the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) market segments for Internet access and multimedia. Included in network nodes (such as head ends, repeaters, or home gateways), FLIP provides Internet or voice services to end customers via standard powerlines. It also addresses home entertainment electronics for audio and video streaming, such as home cinemas, video gaming or home networking. FLIP offers highly integrated digital processing and a data rate of 224 Mbps. It represents a cost-effective solution with a low cost analog front end. FLIP features seven independent sub-bands for various services and applications, and a fully configurable OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique for managing bands and carriers.
FLIP technology has been developed on a specific single platform that integrates the ALTERA Excalibur, high-density FPGA with ARM 922T embedded, two XILINX Virtex2 4000 for digital signal processing prototyping, and the high-reliability OSE RTOS on the Excalibur platform. This open architecture allows OEMs to quickly develop and tune the best powerline solutions.
The OSE RTOS delivers the excellent software performance that FLIP requires. It manages the real-time processes and adds additional software features, such as a TCP/IP stack, that are needed for fast integration into IP networks. SPIDCOM based its selection of an operating system on several criteria, including availability, simplicity and cost efficiency. OSE met all these criteria and was considered the best solution for ease of use and time-to-market. OSE is excellently suited for high-level communications applications; it features very high performance and an efficient and easy-to-use API (application programming interface). Thanks to OSE’s simple RTOS concepts, it allows quick development, which substantially reduces development time and costs.
“OSE on Altera’s ARM-based Excalibur platform has ensured the best time-to-market for our development,” said Etienne Chevreau, technical manager at SPIDCOM Technologies. “The OSE programming model is the easiest we have ever seen,“ he added.

The RTOS and TCP/IP stack had to be integrated on a SoC that handles complex functions,” explained Gilles Richard, general manager of Enea Embedded Technology, France. “This requires a very compact footprint and a quick data process to enable the end-user to have access to the transmission of voice, data and video on a standard powerline at home.”
At present, SPIDCOM Technologies provides two FLIP products for OEMs: The SPiDChip 200 integrated power-line physical layer processor incorporates digital signal processing, an embedded ARM processor, standard interfaces and other components. The SPiDKit 200 Development Kit is a complete modular hardware and software bundle for building prototype applications, setting up field tests and performing feasibility demonstrations.
