Atmel Offers USB On-The-Go Functionality for Embedded Designs

3/31/2004 - Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced during electronicaUSA an extension of its family of USB dual-role devices with a unique USB On-The-Go (OTG) solution to meet the growing demand for OTG/Host functionality in embedded applications. This all-in-one OTG solution features the AT43USB380 USB 2.0 compliant OTG processor capable of offloading USB transactions from the system processor and a comprehensive set of software suite including standard USB class drivers that facilitates rapid application development.

The AT43USB380 is based on Atmel's AT43USB370 host/function processor architecture, a finalist for the EDN Magazine's 2004 Innovator/Innovation Awards. By integrating the same field-proven USB firmware stack on-chip, it provides the necessary intelligence to manage USB transaction autonomously, resulting in minimal USB overhead (interrupts and data transfer) to the system processor. In addition, it utilizes the same device driver and system library with additional OTG enhancement to support standard and custom OTG devices. The RTOS/processor independent library hides the complexity of the USB OTG/host design from the system designers by encapsulating USB functionality into a small set of high level C function calls or APIs.

"With the AT43USB380, adding OTG to an embedded design is as simple as integrating the AT43USB380 device driver APIs into any chosen processor, with or without an RTOS. System designers on longer need to learn the nuts and bolts of the USB protocol, therefore significantly shortening the time-to-market for the OTG/host products," commented Jeff Gao, USB Marketing Manager at Atmel.

The AT43USB380 is designed as a memory mapped OTG co-processor. It can operate in three modes: OTG, standalone host or standalone function. The 32-/16-/8-bit system bus interface allows it to interface with a wide variety of popular embedded processors from the 32-bit ARM to the 8-bit AVR. The DMA engine, along with dual RX and TX FIFO buffering, ensures maximum data throughput for all four USB transfer types (control, isochronous, bulk and interrupt).

A complete development kit, the AT43DK380 is available for evaluation and rapid application development. The AT43DK380 comes with an AT43USB380 reference design board and expansion slots for system processors. It also includes the AT43USB380 USB firmware, standard class drivers and ANSI C compliant Application Programming Interface (API) library for custom USB driver development.

The AT43USB380 comes in a 100-pin TQFP package. Samples are available now. Pricing starts at $4.89 in quantities of 10,000.
