Concurrent and Hybricon Roll Out Products Supporting VITA 31.1

3/24/2004 - Concurrent Technologies and Hybricon have enabled VME system designers to reap the benefits of a packet-based switching architecture with products supporting VITA 31.1 (Gigabit Ethernet on VME64x Backplanes). VITA 31.1 provides a viable serial interconnect method by leveraging the mature PICMG® 2.16 standard into VME64x based systems. This enables a tried and tested method to implement multiprocessor architectures by leveraging available Ethernet hardware, IP software, and clustering software while simultaneously providing scalable VME system performance and redundancy/reliability. Concurrent Technologies’ VP 305/01x, a VME SBC utilizing the Intel® Pentium® M processor, supports VITA 31.1 (via the standard VME64x P0 connector). Hybricon’s Gigabit Ethernet VME64x backplane supports two VITA 31.1 switch fabric slots and nineteen VITA 31.1 node slots. The standard enables off-the-shelf PICMG 2.16 Ethernet switch fabric boards, as well as legacy VME boards, to be used within a VITA 31.1 enclosure.

Concurrent Technologies’ VP 305/01x, a single slot VME/VME64x board, supports either the 1.6 GHz or 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M processor and up to 1.5 Gbytes DDR ECC SDRAM. It has been designed to provide the next stage in higher performance processing with a host of front and rear I/O features including VITA 31.1 support. Board performance is scalable, as the VP 305/01x will support faster versions of the processors as they become available. For ease of integration, the board supports many of today’s leading operating systems. LAN boot firmware is included as well. For harsher environments an extended, -25°C to +70°C, operating temperature version is also available.

Hybricon’s VITA 31.1 6U backplane is available as standard with 21-slots, supporting two fabric slots and nineteen node slots. Custom configurations are available for 2 to 21-slots variants. The design of this backplane leverages Hybricon's PICMG 2.16 signal integrity analysis and implementation experience to achieve the highest performance. For flexible system configuration Hybricon’s VITA 31.1 backplanes are available fitted into various types of Hybricon enclosures. The enclosures, for example the RME21, supports sufficient cooling for greater than 85 Watts/slot using their patented air deflecting CoolSlotTM card guides. The RME21 enclosure can be supplied with up to 1800W power supplies. For harsher environments Hybricon’s VITA 31.1 backplane will operate over -40°C to +85°C; consult Hybricon for a suitable enclosure.
