Brooktrout, Vocomo Help Medical Researchers with Speech Processing

3/24/2004 - Brooktrout Technology, Inc., a leading supplier of media processing, network interface, call control and signal processing products, and Vocomo®, a pioneer in next-generation IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems, announced that Clinical Automation is now using the Vocomo Voice Response, which runs on Brooktrout’s award-winning TR1000TM speech processing platform, in its Recruitment Automation Service. By using the Recruitment Automation Service, clinical trial physicians and researchers can now recruit research subjects faster and more efficiently than with traditional screening methods.

In the past, potential research subjects would read an ad in the newspaper, call a special number and then leave their name and phone number and wait for the researcher to call them back. Often researchers wasted valuable time responding to unqualified subjects. Now subjects can call a number and interact with the Recruitment Automation Service and provide their answers to questions via speech or touchtone. The service will then screen out unqualified subjects, freeing site recruiters to concentrate their recruiting efforts on subjects with the greatest probability of enrollment.

“Vocomo’s advanced IVR products, with their VoiceXML leadership and open architecture, enable us to deliver phone automation applications that meet customers' needs quickly and efficiently,” said Robert Harber, CEO of Clinical Automation. “We are excited to be working with Vocomo to ensure we can deploy best-in-class Recruitment Automation Services to our medical and clinical customers.”

At the core of Vocomo Voice Response is a market leading VoiceXML 2.0 interpreter. This advanced interpreter provides seamless integration of multiple resources including telephony, speech recognition, text-to-speech, and audio. Brooktrout’s TR1000 is a standards-based voice resource platform that connects the Vocomo IVR to the telephone network and processes voice for use by the application. The TR1000 supports a full range of functions including analog and digital call control as well as speech pre-processing for ASR. This allows Vocomo to offer an advanced solution and to scale to the individual deployment requirement. Additionally, Vocomo’s improved Web-based administration console enables remote access to configuration, monitoring, and usage statistics.

“We selected Brooktrout’s TR1000 for our Vocomo Voice Response because it is a comprehensive product line. Brooktrout offers both a digital and analog product that scales from two to 60 channels per board providing us with the flexibility our customers demand,” said Danny Lange, CEO of Vocomo Software. “In addition, we were pleased by the high level of service we received from Brooktrout’s technical support and marketing teams. Brooktrout partnered with us from development to deployment and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.”

The TR1000 allows application vendors to streamline development, deploy broadly, and support their products more cost-effectively than with competing platforms. The performance and flexibility of this feature-rich media platform allows systems to scale in both density and functionality to meet the current and evolving needs of advanced enterprise and service provider applications.
