PLX Supports 10 PCI Devices with FastLane PCI 6156 PCI-to-PCI Bridge

3/18/2004 - PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leading supplier of standard I/O interconnect silicon to the communications, server, storage and embedded-control industries, moved interconnect performance to a new level with the introduction of the industry's first PCI-to-PCI bridge that supports up to 10 PCI devices. The PLX® FastLaneTM PCI 6156 -- a 32-bit, 33MHz PCI-to-PCI bridge -- enables advanced applications such as video capture and surveillance add-in cards to support bridging of up to 10 channels to a single PCI bus. Additionally, because of its single-chip structure, the FastLane PCI 6156 saves cost, reduces board space and lowers power consumption of designs using it.

"Video and other high-end board designs are marching steadily toward higher channel counts and, as such, are faced with challenge of balancing of cost with the number of channels," said Steve Moore, senior product marketing manager at PLX. "Until now, board designers had to either add chips - along with their associated costs - to support 10 channels or reduce on the number of channels the board would feature. The FastLane PCI 6156, however, eliminates that need to compromise and delivers an unprecedented bridging to up to 10 channels in a single, lower-cost chip."

The FastLane PCI 6156 bridges between the host and up to 10 video-capture controllers.

The FastLane PCI 6156 bridges between the host and up to 10 video-capture controllers. In addition to video, the FastLane PCI 6156's 10-channel design also is appropriate for a range of computer add-in card applications such as advanced graphics, as well as in networking and data communications systems. Additionally, board designs based on the FastLane PCI 6156 don't require software drivers because of the chip's full PCI compatibility.

Cost-, Time-, Space-Saving Features
The FastLane PCI 6156:

  • provides single-chip, bus-mastering, programmable arbitration support for 10 PCI devices on a secondary interface, reducing chip device count, power consumption and cost
  • is compliant with PCI Local Bus Specification Rev. 2.2, assuring broad compatibility and extending the life of PCI-based board designs
  • optimizes performance with "no retry penalty" flow and uninterrupted 0 wait state burst up to 1kbytes
  • features concurrent primary and secondary port operation, eliminating traffic congestion
  • has five buffered secondary PCI clock outputs for ease of connection
  • supports 3.3-volt PCI with 5-volt-tolerant I/O, supporting legacy PCI devices and extending their compatibility range
  • comes in industry-standard 208-pin PQFP package
  • is supported by a complete PLX reference design platform, including evaluation board and software

The PLX FastLane PCI 6156 PCI-to-PCI bridge is available now in PQFP packages at $6 in volume quantities. For information on the FastLane PCI 6156, contact PLX Technology at 800.759.3735.
