Eckerd Migrates Mission-Critical App to J2EE with Compuware OptimalJ

3/12/2004 - Eckerd Corporation, one of the nation’s leading pharmacy organizations with more than 2,700 retail drug stores, has selected Compuware (NASDAQ: CPWR) OptimalJ to migrate its business-critical vendor-database application using J2EE. Eckerd chose Compuware’s advanced development solution because the company needed to minimize costs and application complexity while ensuring best practice standards were used--which was particularly important for its entrée into J2EE development.

Eckerd’s drug warehouse database application, as a central repository of information for all of its suppliers, is critical to the company’s success in a highly competitive industry. The drug chain, which fills some 200 million prescriptions annually, needed to ensure that future changes could be made quickly and efficiently. Eckerd was particularly impressed with the model-driven, pattern-based approach employed by Compuware OptimalJ, an approach that literally builds-in and helps ensure best practices, future flexibility and minimal costs during upgrades and changes.

“We are about to re-build a mission-critical enterprise application, and we needed a proven J2EE tool that would meet our diverse needs and support our efforts as we grow the application,” said Demetrios Yannakopoulos, Chief Architect for Eckerd. “With information being fed to us by dozens of external vendors and with our database being touched by several applications within the company, minimizing complexity efficiently is our primary concern. After looking at several leading solutions, it was very clear that Compuware OptimalJ does this better than any other product--and at the lowest cost; our purchase decision was driven from both a business and an IT perspective.”

Compuware OptimalJ is an advanced development solution for enterprises building J2EE applications. Its model-driven, pattern-based approach dramatically reduces the time, cost, risk and complexity associated with delivering and maintaining Java applications. Customers continue to report initial development savings of around 40 percent over traditional development solutions. Moreover, they report savings of up to 90 percent in the important ongoing “maintenance” phase of the application, where most application dollars are spent.

“The consensus from analysts, customers and developers is virtually unanimous: the model-driven, pattern-based approach employed by Compuware OptimalJ is the future of application development,” said Dan Schoenbaum, VP Strategy, Compuware. “Compuware OptimalJ is a proven and respected tool for businesses in all industries, and we are pleased to help Eckerd pioneer its key J2EE vendor application in a timely and cost-effective manner.”
