3/11/2004 - Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) announced a new set of compact DC/DC converter ICs that provide independent control, soft-starting and fast-switching for communications equipment and consumer products.
All the new DC/DC converters have been developed to meet the evolving power-management requirements of portable and handheld devices. Each takes advantage of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques to maximize performance.
"Reliable and efficient power management is a critical requirement in the new generations of consumer electronics products and communications equipment," said Keith Horn, FMA's vice president of marketing. "Fujitsu has applied its expertise in this technology to deliver optimal chips for customers who need very precise functionality in compact packages."
The MB39A112 is a 3-channel converter that uses PWM to achieve oscillating frequencies between 250 KHz and 2.6 MHz. The device operates on power-supply voltages of 7V to 25V, is optimized for down-conversion, and incorporates a soft-start circuit and timer-latch short-circuit detection circuit that guards against inrush currents during startup. Designed specifically as a built-in power supply for ADSL fast-switching applications, the MB39A112 is available in 20-pin thin small outline (TSSOP) packaging.
The MB39A113 and MB39A114 DC/DC converter ICs are designed for charging lithium ion batteries, widely used in notebook PCs. These two versions, which also use PWM methods, control the output voltage and output current independently. Each version incorporates an AC adapter detector, constant voltage-control status detection and overvoltage detection, affording maximum protection against false charging. The AC adapter detection function turns output off when the difference between the AC voltage and output drops to +0.2 V or less. The A113 is ideal for 1 to 4 cell Li-ion batteries or a single battery pack while the A114 is ideal for 3 or 4 cell Li-ion batteries. Both are available in 24-pin SSOPs.
The MB39A115 is a 5-channel DC/DC converter with synchronous rectification based on PWM, designed for supplying power in new digital cameras and other high-performance portable products. Building on Fujitsu's experience in power-management technology, the new converter operates between 2.5V and 11V, with a very low 1.7V starting voltage. As with the other new versions, the A115 incorporates soft-start circuitry and timer-latch short-circuit detection to pre-empt inrush startup current and short circuits that create overcurrent. The device comes in a 38-pin TSSOP.
Pricing and Availability
The new series of DC/DC converters is available now, with prices beginning at $2.59 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
