3/9/2004 - IONA® (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high performance integration solutions for mission critical IT environments, announced that IONA Chief Technical Officer Eric Newcomer's best-selling Understanding Web Services is the recipient of the 2003 Web Services Journal/XML-Journal Readers' Choice Award for Best Web Services Book.
The Web Services Journal/XML-Journal Readers' Choice Awards program has become one of the most respected industry competitions of its kind, and is referred to informally as the "Oscars of the software industry". All Readers' Choice Award recipients are selected through reader-submitted nominations, followed by online voting. The polls for the 2003 awards were open for just under a year, from March 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003, during which time more than 15,000 votes were cast.
"We are honored that Eric Newcomer, a member of IONA's team of integration thought leaders and one of our best minds, has been recognized by a particularly innovative segment of the software developer community," said Chris Horn, IONA CEO. "It is fitting that someone who has influenced both technologies and people so profoundly should be the recipient of such a prestigious award."
Newcomer has influenced the evolution, as well as the adoption, of Web services since the technology's inception. He leads IONA's participation in the standardization activities around Web services. He was a founding member of the XML Protocols Working Group at W3C, which produced SOAP 1.2. He was editor of the Web Services Architecture specification at the W3C and is IONA's primary representative to OASIS and WS-I. Eric is co-author and editor of the recently published Web Services Composite Application Framework (WS-CAF) set of specifications submitted to OASIS. His new book, Web Services Integration is due in early 2004 from Addison Wesley.
