3/9/2004 - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTEC), the company driving the global core system software standard in PC systems and connected digital devices for 25 years, has extended its multi-year licensing agreement with Samsung to incorporate Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cMETM) FirstBIOS Notebook and Phoenix cME FirstBIOS Desktop into all Samsung desktops and notebooks shipped worldwide. The addition of this core system software from Phoenix delivers increased security, usability, manageability and connectivity to Samsung customers. It will also help Samsung control manufacturing costs and increase its success in the highly competitive PC market. The largest company in Korea, Samsung is a global PC market leader and a longtime Phoenix partner.
"Phoenix is at the forefront of the industry, leading the evolution of device firmware to increase its capabilities beyond those of traditional PC BIOS," said H.S. Kim, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Samsung. "We have been very pleased with Phoenix products not only for traditional quality, but also for the differentiation it offers and for helping us improve our time to market. This helps us to exceed the demands of increasingly connected and digitally dependent users. With cME-certified Phoenix core system software in our PCs, Samsung can feel confident that we are offering the best digital machines with unique capabilities that our users expect."
Phoenix cME FirstBIOS is a comprehensive family of core system software products, capitalizing on the Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cME). Built into the core of a digital machine but independent of its operating system (OS), Phoenix cME is a portfolio of enabling technologies that can deliver improved system reliability and management capabilities that are always available and totally secure.
Samsung began shipping these products earlier this month. They use a complete Phoenix solution - from Core System Software to Phoenix cME Console and FirstWare® applications - to offer greater reliability and manageability for Samsung customers.
Phoenix cME FirstBIOS offers other additional value beyond the reliability and interoperability of Phoenix BIOS products. Phoenix cME technology provides extensibility for a range of core platform utilities and applications (such as fingerprint identification for greater trust), significantly enhanced performance for faster boot times, and a ROM-based security framework for strong authentication. All of these features help OEMs build the most stable and unique products while reducing development cycles and improving time to market.
"Our strategy is to deliver core system software products that offer security, high performance and innovative functionality to the world's best PC manufacturers," said Michael Goldgof, Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Products Division for Phoenix. "Companies like Samsung can strengthen and differentiate their market positions with Phoenix cME products and its built-in applications and technologies. We value the Samsung partnership and we continue to help them create the best digital products and experiences for their customers."
Founded in 1979, Phoenix Technologies (NASDAQ: PTEC) helped launch the digital revolution when it created the industry's leading machine-independent BIOS software, which ships in more than 100 million new systems each year. Phoenix leveraged that core-level experience to develop Core System Software, which moves beyond BIOS for the age of networked devices. Today, Phoenix solutions activate, secure, connect, and recover the world's best-known systems. These solutions operate from the Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cME), where they're built in and protected from viruses, user errors, hackers, and corruption. Phoenix is headquartered in Milpitas, Calif. USA (Silicon Valley), with offices in global business and technology centers.
