3/2/2004 - Performance Technologies (Nasdaq NM: PTIX), a leader in unified systems design for the communications, military and commercial markets, introduced the SEGwayTM 2200 IP-Edge device. Combining the SEGway IP-Edge with an IP-capable STP or a SEGway Mini-STP produces an integrated solution that IP-enables expensive elements of the traditional SS7 network and significantly lowers overall transport and operational costs for wireless and wireline carriers.
The SEGway IP-Edge, complete with Performance Technologies’ industry leading SS7/IP interworking software, allows carriers to reduce port charges and reduce overall transport to connecting STP nodes by aggregating signaling traffic and performing routing locally. With its low cost of ownership, customers will realize a rapid return on their investment while protecting their existing investment in legacy signaling equipment.
“Transporting SS7 traffic over leased, dedicated, circuit-based SS7 links can be very costly, because network operators must provision for dedicated, often redundant circuits whether they will fully utilize them or not,” said Deb Brunner-Walker, product manager for Performance Technologies. “By offloading SS7 traffic onto lower cost IP networks, network operators can see up to a 70 percent reduction in transport costs when compared with leased circuit lines.”
SEGway 2200 IP-Edge devices are positioned next to wireless or wireline network entities such as Switching Service Points (SSP), Home Location Registers (HLR) or other signaling nodes and are used to reliably transport SS7 messages over managed, shared-use IP networks to an IP-enabled STP. The SEGway IP-Edge utilizes SCTP and M2PA - the Internet Engineering Task Force Signaling Transport working group’s (IETF SIGTRAN) SS7/IP interworking protocol standards - to ensure the same high level of transport reliability as traditional circuit-based SS7 links.
Powerful and reliable, the carrier-grade SEGway IP-Edge is currently offered as a stand-alone unit that occupies only 1U space in a standard telecom central office rack. Each IP-Edge unit has capacity to handle up to 32 SS7 links, originating from the same node or aggregated from different sources and groomed onto a single outgoing IP SS7 link. The SEGway IP-Edge can be deployed redundantly, and it supports T1, E1 and V.35 interfaces and all major variants of SS7 protocols including ANSI, ITU, China and Japan.
The SEGway IP-Edge is well suited for direct sales to carriers or as an OEM offering for other telecommunications equipment vendors who are looking to offer IP connectivity to their IP-enabled STP nodes. The SEGway IP-Edge is available immediately.
