Agilent Technologies Debuts 10 Gb/s Optical Transceiver Family
3/1/2004 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced a complete family of 10 Gb/s Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and SONET/SDH fiber optic transceivers for enterprise, storage and metro networks. Agilent's new 10 Gb XENPAK, X2 and XFP MSA-compliant fiber optic transceivers cover all major physical media device types and link distances, and are hot-pluggable. These new transceivers also offer industry-leading optical, electrical, thermal and digital diagnostics performance.
Agilent's new 10 Gb/s fiber optic transceivers provide comprehensive coverage and superior performance for the fast-growing number of 10 Gb applications in enterprise storage and metro networking equipment. These versatile transceiver form factors allow customers to scale port densities from high-end multiport routers and switches to single-port network interface cards and host bus adapters.
"Agilent was instrumental in the development of all three 10 Gb MSAs and is now rolling out a large portfolio of high-performance XENPAK, X2 and XFP fiber optic transceivers, all backed by the assurance of supply and quality our customers have come to expect," said Tom Fawcett, worldwide marketing manager for Agilent's Fiber Optic Products Division. "As the world's number-one supplier of fiber optic transceivers, we are globally positioned to advise customers in their next-generation 10 Gb designs, and to ramp volume as their needs dictate."
Agilent's new 10 Gb/s devices include a range of 10 km to 40 km solutions, all qualified to Telecordia GR.468. The company is also leading a broad industry effort to create a short-reach optical standard for 10 Gb/s transmission over 220 meters of FDDI-grade multimode fiber. This fiber is used extensively in enterprise building backbones and campus connections. Agilent expects to migrate this technology to its XENPAK, X2 and XFP platforms. The company is demonstrating multimode XENPAK samples at the OFC Conference.
XENPAK Family
Agilent's XENPAK 10 Gb Ethernet portfolio includes the following fiber optic transceiver modules:
- HFCT-701XB 10 km 10GBASE-LR optical transceiver
- HFCT-701XBD 10 km 10GBASE-LR optical transceiver that features digital diagnostics, including real-time monitoring of the transceivers temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, transmitted optical power and received optical power
- HFCT-703XBD 40 km 10GBASE-ER with digital diagnostics
X2 Family
Agilent's X2 10 Gb portfolio includes the following fiber optic transceiver modules:
- HFCT-701X2D, which is a natural evolution of Agilent's market-leading XENPAK 10 km 10GBASE-LR and features digital diagnostics in lopak, midpak and hipak form factors, as defined in the X2 MSA
- HFCT-721X2D includes all the advanced capability of the HFCT-701X2D while conforming to the Fibre Channel data rate and register specification. It is available in lopak, midpak and hipak form factors, as defined in the X2 MSA
XFP Family
Agilent's XFP 10 Gb portfolio includes the following fiber optic transceiver modules:
- HFCT-711XPD 1310 nm with digital diagnostics, which supports Ethernet 10 GBASE-LR (10 km LAN PHY, 10.3125 Gb/s), and 10 GBASE-LW (10 km WAN PHY, 9.58464 Gb/s), as well as Fibre Channel 10 Gb serial PMD, type 1200-SM-LL-L, (10 km 10.51875 Gb/s), and SONET/SDH (7 km OC-192/STM-64 rate 9.9532 Gb/s) Telcordia GR-253-CORE SR-1 and 2 km ITU-T G.691 STM64 I64.1
- HFCT-721XPD 10 km, 1300 nm, lower cost Ethernet and Fibre Channel only version that features digital diagnostics
Availability
The HFCT-701XB and HFCT-701XBD (10 km) XENPAK fiber optic transceivers are available now through Agilent's direct sales channel. A 220-meter multimode fiber XENPAK version is sampling to select customers, and is expected to be released once the IEEE specification is stable. The HFCT-703XBD (40 km) XENPAK is sampling now.
The HFCT-701X2D (Ethernet) X2, HFCT-721X2D (Fibre Channel) X2, HFCT-711XPD (SONET/SDH, Ethernet, Fibre Channel) XFP, and HFCT-721XPD (Ethernet, Fibre Channel) XFP are sampling now, with broad availability expected in mid-2004. Both variants are available in lopak, midpak and hipak form factor versions.
