3/1/2004 - QNX Software Systems announced it won the Embedded Award 2004 in the application software & services category at last week’s Embedded World Conference in Nuremberg, Germany. A blue ribbon panel of judges chose QNX from a list of nearly 50 nominees for its revolutionary power management framework, which enables OEMs building in-car telematics systems, medical instruments and other mobile devices to boost system responsiveness while extending battery life.
Unlike conventional approaches to power management, the QNX framework gives designers precise control over the power consumption of each system component. As a result, components draw power only when, and to the degree, they have to. At the heart of the QNX power management framework is a centralized power manager, a customizable user-space process that implements a power policy specified by the system designer. The manager acts as a “power broker” that uses its intimate knowledge of all subsystems and applications to negotiate the most appropriate power-state changes for any given scenario.
“Conventional forms of power management may be fine for laptops and PDAs, but they don't offer the enormous flexibility that embedded developers require,” said Norbert Struck, managing director Germany, QNX Software Systems. “With the QNX power management framework, however, developers can create power policies that handle custom hardware, ensure predictable response times, fine-tune power consumption in response to application-specific events, and, ultimately, ensure longer battery life for mobile devices.
In contrast to conventional approaches, the QNX power management framework allows the application developer, not the OS, to determine power management policies. As a result, developers can create a highly customized power policy for every system they build and address device-specific problems unanticipated by existing power management standards. Leading telematics suppliers in the automotive industry are already integrating the QNX power management framework into their next-generation devices.
