2/27/2004 - T-Networks Incorporated and Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: VTSS), announced that the combination of the Vitesse VSC7992 10.7Gb/s NRZ/RZ Modulator Driver and the T-Networks LIM100L-RZ Laser-Integrated-Module (LIM) has been demonstrated to provide a next generation transmitter solution for WDM optical transmission systems that delivers significant advantages versus today’s complex designs. The new approach reduces size, power and cost by implementing a two-chip return-to-zero (RZ) transmission format solution.
Traditional approaches to RZ transmitter designs include a separate CW laser, two Lithium Niobate modulators, and high-voltage drivers that consume significant electrical power. A much more efficient approach uses the VSC7992 driving the LIM100L-RZ, an electro-absorption (EA) modulator based device that requires substantially lower drive voltages. The reduction in component count results in a 5x reduction in size of the implemented transmitter. By enabling the use of EA modulators in place of LiNbO3 modulators the total solution power and cost is also reduced by approximately 30%.
The advent of WDM systems designed to transmit longer distances at individual channel bit rates of 10Gb/s has made it essential for systems designers to consider the inherent advantages of various modulation formats for their system designs. RZ systems offer many advantages in optical transmission that result in higher link performance through higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower bit error rates. In addition, the link limiting effects of chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) are reduced when RZ modulation is employed.
“Key differentiators in this driver-LIM combination are smaller size and lower power consumption with off the shelf components,” said David Huff, VP of Marketing for T-Networks. “These benefits combined with the successful demonstration of 6000km data links will revolutionize the design of ultra-long haul transmission systems.”
The VSC7992 is a member of Vitesse’s Smart-LINKTM family of advanced link optimization products. It is a precision, monolithic integrated circuit (IC) that generates both return-to-zero (RZ) and non-return-to zero (NRZ) data output formats for driving externally modulated lasers. The device features selectable output re-timing and a duty cycle control pin to optimize the optical output data eye. Clock and data inputs are internally terminated. The VSC7992 operates from a single power supply and is available in a small 22-pin ceramic package.

The Telcordia-qualified T-Networks LIMTM platform, based on EAMPTM technology, incorporates integrated Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers, modulators and optical amplifiers in a standard 7-pin EML-compatible package with inter-chip isolated coupling. The photonics team at T-Networks has incorporated features that enable RZ transmission and position the LIM platform as a clear leader for EA modulators used in this application.
