2/26/2004 - LynuxWorksTM Inc. and RTITM announced their partnership to deliver RTI's NDDS® open-standards middleware to LynuxWorks' LynxOS® embedded real-time operating system (RTOS). Together, LynuxWorks and RTI's standards-based solution will support the Navy Open Architecture Computing Environment (OACE) which is aimed at improving war-fighting capability by implementing international standards and creating common applications and services in military platforms.
NDDS is RTI's real-time publish-subscribe product based on the DDS standard, the new publish-subscribe standard for real-time networking. The Object Management Group (OMG), the same vendor-neutral organization responsible for CORBA, created DDS to provide a common application-level interface to facilitate the efficient distribution of data in a distributed system. NDDS is currently powering the Ship Wide Area Network (SWAN) for integrating shipboard electronic systems in the new LPD 17 class of Navy warships.
With NDDS, developers utilizing LynuxWorks' LynxOS hard real-time operating system gain a cost-effective, off-the-shelf standards-based solution for effective and quick communication between processors in an embedded system. By replacing proprietary middleware code, NDDS delivers field-proven system reliability and standards-based portability.
For more than 15 years, LynuxWorks has supported numerous military and government customers in developing their mission-critical defense systems. LynuxWorks is currently working with the Navy OACE to help them achieve cost-savings and standardization in a variety of devices and vehicles to ensure security and reliability. The OACE stipulates that all future software development will be tested to OACE standards. Furthermore, the Navy will not accept software that does not conform to these standards. By ensuring that all future software development upholds to open standards, future upgrades to software and hardware can be made seamlessly, vastly improving interoperability and significantly reducing costs.
