2/26/2004 - Intermec Technologies Corp. announced the release of an enhanced version of its SyVox® speech logistics software, now with IBM Embedded ViaVoice® technology, for the Intermec® 700 Series Color family of mobile computers. The latest SyVox software includes the speaker-independent IBM Embedded ViaVoice speech engine, which supports natural language commands and dynamically modifies grammar to account for local dialects. Initial launch includes English and U.S. Spanish. Additional languages are scheduled to be available later in 2004.
Speech recognition allows workers to give instructions to a belt-mounted 700 Series Color mobile computer through a headset and to communicate verbally with an ERP or WMS system through a wireless network. These speech recognition and speech-to-text capabilities allow mobile workers to perform hands-free data collection. The system integrates with existing warehouse management systems and enterprise resource planning systems and functions accurately in noisy industrial environments.
The new communications system is ideal for warehouse and distribution applications, allowing picking and cycle count activities to be completed more quickly and accurately. It is particularly effective in environments where traditional bar-coding technologies haven't been a fit. Examples include warehouses where users are required to pick a high volume of SKUs, such as retail and grocery settings; freezer environments where functions are difficult because of heavy gloves; and environments that include items that aren’t conducive to bar code labels.
“Managers today are expected to shave seconds, or even minutes, off the time an item is handled to improve efficiency and lower costs. Because talking typically is faster than inputting keyboard commands, mobile workers can save significant time – and that means money – by speaking their computer commands," said Intermec Vice President Mike Colwell. “With this relationship, our customers get industry-leading speech recognition capabilities with the level of support only Intermec and IBM can provide.”
"With the growth of mobile devices, speech becomes a natural way to access technology," said Eugene Cox, director, product management, IBM Pervasive Computing. “Teaming with companies such as Intermec allows customers additional flexibility in using devices to input information on the move, in a flexible and hands-free environment."
This innovative technology, one more way customers benefit from Intermec and IBM’s long-standing history of working together, adds a powerful additional capability to the Intermec rugged 700 Series Color. The 700 Series Color is the first family of Pocket PC mobile computers designed specifically for serious enterprise mobility. It already has become a favorite with workers whose daily shifts require powerful, reliable and easy-to-use handheld computers that can take the abuse of industrial, mobile and retail environments. The 700 Color features a large, brilliant color display, combined with the power and speed of Intel Corp.'s 400 MHz X-Scale processor to increase the flexibility and functionality of the original 700 Series Color.
The 700 Series Color goes beyond standard Pocket PC devices to support the AC '97 audio standard for high-quality sound. It includes a full-range speaker and microphone. The 700 Color also is the first enterprise Pocket PC device to offer an imager suitable for reading barcodes (including 2D symbologies), taking photographs and capturing signatures. In addition, it integrates up to three wireless communication options in a single device, including a wireless local area (802.11b) radio, a GSM/GPRS wide area network radio and a fully integrated power-managed Bluetooth(tm) radio.
