Enea Unveils J2ME Based on WebSphere Micro Environment for OSE RTOS

2/25/2004 - Enea Embedded Technology, a leading provider of operating system solutions for the telecom market, announced the availability of a Java 2 Micro Edition (J2METM) solution based on IBM’s WebSphere Micro Environment (WME) for the OSE real-time operating system (RTOS). Developers relying on the OSE RTOS can now take advantage of IBM’s highly optimized certified Java PoweredTM technology to enable application interoperability with a wide variety of devices. OSE support also includes development tools based on IBM’s WebSphere Studio Device Developer.

By integrating WME, the OSE solution provides a runtime that is compliant with the official Java specification for Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and offers an open operating system solution. As next generation wireless devices and applications become more common, the need for interoperable platforms using open standards will continue to increase. WebSphere Micro Environment is certified to the J2ME standard and is thereby officially Java PoweredTM. This can enable Java applications for OSE based devices running the integrated WebSphere Micro Environment, to be interoperable with other Java Powered devices.

WebSphere Micro Environment is a highly optimized Java runtime environment. It specifically addresses physically small and memory constrained embedded consumer devices like feature phones and smart phones with high demands on efficiency and performance. Together with the resource saving and compact OSE RTOS, it forms the ideal open platform for cost and power efficient wireless devices.

Included in the J2ME solution for OSE is also a powerful set of tools, including a complete Java IDE and accessory plug-ins such as profiling and system analyzing, all based on IBM’s WebSphere Studio Device Developer. These development tools can be used both in target environments, and also in host environments on a PC or workstation. All Java runtimes and tools are integrated with the powerful OSE Soft Kernel and Soft Environment, which simulate the complete OSE operating system on a Windows, UNIX or Linux operating system. Java applications can thereby be developed in a desktop environment and then can be easily moved onto the target system.

The OSE operating system is a scalable RTOS solution for embedded devices. In particular, OSE offers the complete range of functionality needed in modern mobile phones, such as crash safe file system with advanced flash support, efficient power management for longer battery life, memory management including full MMU support for robust performance, and dynamic software updates during run-time, thus providing the basis for new mobile services. OSE is the only commercially available OS that supports distributed, multi-core systems with ARM and digital signal processors typically found in mobile phones. With OSE, manufacturers only need one operating system for the modem and application units, which greatly simplifies mobile phone development and makes these efforts much more profitable.
