2/18/2004 - Enea Embedded Technology announced the availability of the latest release of PolyhedraTM, the industry’s most advanced relational database management solution (RDBMS). Polyhedra 5.0, available on Unix, Linux, Windows and embedded systems such as OSE and VxWorks, offers two major enhancements: Unicode support allows text in the database to include accented characters and special symbols, while with the schema migration support customers can field-upgrade their Polyhedra-based applications with minimal disruption. Polyhedra 5.0 remains fully compatible with its earlier versions.
The Polyhedra system is an active RDBMS designed from the ground up to provide a secure, fault-tolerant data repository for embedded systems applications. With a low code footprint, Polyhedra features a memory-resident design that boosts performance by an order of magnitude relative to conventional disk-based RDBMSs, without sacrificing data security.
With the new Unicode support, Polyhedra 5.0 now allows strings containing international characters to be handled. This makes it far easier for customers developing Polyhedra-based products to use extended character sets in names, descriptions, messages, and other textual values that have to be preserved in the database. With schema migration support, changes to the structures of the tables held within a running database can be made without disruption, while the changes are automatically replicated to the standby server. Now it is even possible to group a sequence of changes together, to be done as a single transaction. Therefore customers can field-upgrade a Polyhedra-based application with little or no disruption to the overall service - a critical benefit in systems requiring a very high level of availability.
Polyhedra’s active technology makes databases more robust, simplifies applications, and enhances performance. Active queries, for example, provide data change notification to the application as soon as it happens. This eliminates the need for polling, thereby reducing processor and network bandwidth usage. Polyhedra also uses active, triggered, database-resident code, which enables application level data integrity rules to be built right into the database. This enhances transaction-based data integrity mechanisms and provides in-database transformation upon client request or data change.
Polyhedra provides built-in fault tolerant capabilities such as enhanced failover control and fast reconnection (to the new master) that boost availability. Furthermore it employs a heterogeneous client-server architecture that greatly enhances data integrity and code stability. The client-server implementation also greatly simplifies the development of front-end and off-board clients by making the database location transparent to the developer. With Polyhedra, the development of applications that talk to the database can take place before the board design is finalized and the database software integrated onto the board.
Release 5.0 supports major database standards (i.e., SQL, ODBC, JDBC) and provides cross platform support for multiple operating systems (i.e., Windows, Linux, Solaris, IRIX, AIX, OSE and VxWorks). Coupled with the OSE real-time operating system, the pair makes a formidable team for fast, reliable data management. The OSE RTOS is a compact, fully pre-emptive, high-availability, multi-processor RTOS designed for distributed, high-performance, multi-channel, multi-function communications applications. OSE enhances reliability and availability by providing automatic failure detection and supervision, and building a firewall that prevents kernel and application processes from corrupting each other.
