2/13/2004 - Designed specifically for printer interface applications, Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced the industry´s first IEEE 1284 interface solution that meets the IEC 61000-4-2 standard for ESD protection. As the leader in logic technology advancements, TI´s latest entry into the 1284 bi-directional parallel peripheral space, the LVCE161284, is a feature rich, highly-integrated solution that offers best-in-class ESD protection, reduces part count and saves board space.
Plugging and unplugging printer cables can subject printer ports to high electrostatic discharge conditions which may completely disable the printer. Previous IEEE 1284 interface solutions required external ESD protection to overcome these events. TI leveraged its logic technology capability to incorporate these external protection diodes into the new LVCE161284 solution without sacrificing reliability. The new solution provides +/- 15 kV human body model, +/-8 kV contact, and +/- 15 kV air-gap discharge protection in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 (level 4) on the connector interface pins. The high level of integration in the LVCE161284 allows designers to reduce part count and cost while saving valuable board real estate.
The LVCE161284 also offers additional improvements over other 1284 interface devices such as: Ioff and Power-Up 3-State to support Hot Insertion, an integrated PMOS transistor to prevent back-drive current, hysteresis at all inputs to provide noise margin, and an Auto-Power-Up feature which prevents printer errors when the printer is turned on and no valid signal is at connector side pins. Much like the other 1284 devices, flow-through pinout helps to optimize circuit layout.
