2/13/2004 - Accelerated Technology®, the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT), announced a version of the Nucleus® Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) for developers using the DSP-based TMS320DA180 network audio processor from Texas Instruments (TI). Networking developers in the streaming media market now have a royalty-free solution in which to build applications that can access and retrieve information stored on one device and make it available elsewhere in a home environment.
The growth of broadband, or high-speed data transmission, to the home has allowed more media-rich content to be made available to the consumer. Additionally, the cost of home networking technologies has reached the consumer price point. The combination of these trends is leading to an increase in networked homes, including those that already have many devices that store media. For example, computers are used to store music and personal audio recorders (PAR) are used to store audio content for playback.
With the growth in home networks, it becomes possible to stream the media from where it is stored to other locations within the home for playback. The integration of the Nucleus RTOS and the TMS320DA180 processor provides a platform for developers of end-point products, such as media adapters, capable of playing audio on the devices mentioned above and render it in other parts of the home.
The TMS320DA180 processor is a single-chip audio processing device that is capable of multi-format audio decoding. It is based on a TI TMS320C54xTM digital signal processor (DSP), with the ARM®7 RISC processor as well as a 10/100BT Ethernet MAC interface.
The Nucleus PLUS kernel, integrated with the TMS320DA180 processor, is scalable, highly optimized, and the basis for the Nucleus RTOS family of products. The Nucleus NET TCP/IP protocol stack and the Nucleus FILE file management software products provide a robust networking suite and file management package for developers building streaming media applications.
“As the streaming media market continues to grow, networking developers demand more flexible and competitive solutions, such as the Nucleus RTOS, to be used in digital media products,” said Charlie Gonsalves, business development for TI’s streaming media group. “TI is pleased that Accelerated Technology is expanding its offerings to include a royalty-free solution for developers utilizing our DA180.”
“Because of TI’s market-leading position, we have seen a demand from customers to support the TI DSPs, as well as other TI processors, with the Nucleus RTOS. In addition, the source-code, no-royalty business model for Nucleus software is an ideal match for the consumer electronics markets at which the TMS320DA180 processor is aimed,” said Robert Day, director of marketing, Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division.
Pricing and Availability
The Nucleus embedded software is sold with source code and without royalty fees. Licenses for the Nucleus software begin at $12,495. For more information, please contact Accelerated Technology at 800-468-6853 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
