Fastrax GPS Drives into RCN-Conti's New Telematics Tracking Devices

2/11/2004 - Fastrax Ltd., a developer of OEM GPS receivers with industry-leading performance and feature set, and RCN-Conti, a developer and producer of Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Management telematics devices, announced the inclusion of Fastrax OEM GPS technology in Navi1100 and Navi1200 tracking devices produced and marketed by RCN-Conti. Following the recent commercial launch of Navi1200, both devices are now available for immediate delivery.

RCN-Conti’s tracking devices are targeted to vehicle telematics applications and fleet management solutions with stringent requirements for cost efficiency, including e.g. public transport. The devices feature a Siemens MC35i dual band GPRS/GSM modem and a Fastrax iTrax02/8 OEM GPS receiver, a programmable 12-channel module with one of the lowest power consumptions on the market.

RCN-Conti Navi1200 is an intelligent telematics device that collects both vehicle and GPS positioning data, and transfers the information to a dispatcher center using either a GSM/GPRS connection or an optional satellite communication service. The vehicle data is based on an objective evaluation of operative data retrieved from a CAN interface, including measures such as total distance driven, total fuel used, driver working time, total engine hours with engine speed over the “green zone”, engine temperature, and more.

With its versatile architecture, Navi1200 suits in various applications tailored to meet customer needs and requirements. Its several external sensors and connections include CAN interfaces, temperature sensors, taximeters, PDAs, fuel level sensors and passenger counting sensors. NaviSat Solutions allow dispatchers to manage their fleet conveniently and efficiently, increasing the efficiency and productivity of their drivers.

“We have received tremendously positive feedback from our pilot users as well as from potential new customers. The idea of combining vehicle data with position data and transmitting the information further to a dispatcher center is well appreciated by many fleet owners. By choosing Fastrax as a GPS provider we wanted to make sure that the device is technologically advanced and that we can provide our customers with the best possible solution”, said Mr. Sergejs Sofjins, General Manager, RCN-Conti.

“The Navi1100 and Navi1200 devices feature the newest embedded OEM GPS technology available in the market. Due to their small size and extreme sensitivity, the Fastrax GPS receivers deliver accurate position data even in very demanding environments, making intelligent yet cost efficient telematics solutions feasible and attractive. Managing and monitoring fleets more efficiently may bring substantial cost savings”, said Fredrik Borgström, European Sales Manager, Fastrax Ltd.

Designed for demanding conditions, Fastrax GPS technology offers industry-leading performance and reliability along with fast time to first fix (TTFF), even in dynamic situations. The low power drain enables an extremely long operating time, a crucial factor in stand-alone, battery operated telematics devices.

Fastrax Ltd develops industry-leading products for optimal utilization of GNSS location services (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). The most well known of these services is GPS (Global Positioning System). Fastrax transforms GPS technologies into highly scalable solutions with open interfaces, combined with ultra low power consumption and miniature hardware design. With industry-leading performance, Fastrax GPS receivers navigate continuously even in extreme conditions. Versatile programmability of selected receiver models and other key features enable the integration in both industrial location applications and high-volume consumer products such as cell phones and sports accessories. Headquartered in Finland and founded in 1999, the company is privately owned and backed by leading venture capital investors CapMan, Eqvitec, Startupfactory and Innocap, with a strategic investment by Suunto Corporation, a subsidiary of Amer Group, a leading global supplier of sporting goods equipment. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide satellite navigation infrastructure funded and controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense, originally developed for U.S. military purposes. GPS provides satellite signals that enable GPS receivers to calculate their exact position and velocity. The GPS infrastructure has three segments. The space segment consists of 24 satellites that orbit the earth in 12 hours. The control segment consists of tracking stations located around the world, with the master control station located at Falcon Air Force Base in Colorado. The user segment consists of GPS receivers and users utilizing the information provided by the system. GPS is widely used in e.g. marine navigation.
