Brooktrout to Add Fax on Voice over IP Networks to Fax Boards

2/11/2004 - Brooktrout Technology, Inc., the worldwide market leader of intelligent fax boards, announced that it plans to provide a new software release in 2004 that will enable fax over IP capabilities on its TR1034 intelligent fax boards. The new TR1034, which is now equipped with an Ethernet connection, can be used today for PSTN-based network faxing, and, when companies transition their communications networks to voice over IP (VoIP), the anticipated software release will allow expansion to support fax over IP. In addition, Brooktrout intends that these boards will also be interoperable with the leading VoIP gateway networking equipment.

“As companies incorporate IP into their communications networking strategy, the question of how to provide real-time fax over IP is a natural one. Brooktrout’s plans for the new hybrid TR1034 means that our customers could implement a PSTN-based fax solution today, and when their IT decision dictates, migrate that solution to voice over IP without the need to replace their existing network fax hardware,” said Jürgen Stephan, vice president of Global Marketing from Captaris. “This is an important issue for our customers who want to deploy a reliable fax solution on their network today, but don’t want to invest in a solution that will become obsolete when they install a VoIP-based network in the future.”

Brooktrout Technology has a long history in both real-time PSTN and IP-based fax, beginning in the 1980s with Brooktrout’s development of X.38 products. Brooktrout Technology’s co-founder and CTO, David Duehren, is the primary editor and contributing author of the T.38 real-time fax over IP protocol specification. In addition, Brooktrout’s T.38 technology has been adopted by Ricoh, a leading provider of fax machines.

“Businesses looking to migrate to real-time fax over IP need to work with companies like Brooktrout and Biscom, that have extensive knowledge in both the traditional PSTN-based faxing as well as IP fax,” said Ed Harnish, director of Marketing/Business Development for Biscom. “Brooktrout has been the leader in the fax board market for the last 10 years, and we know that our customers can be confident about their decision when purchasing our FAXCOM software for use with a Brooktrout intelligent fax board.”

“We’ve been a Brooktrout partner for many years, and throughout that time Brooktrout has consistently been at the forefront of providing the most advanced intelligent fax technology,” said Thaddeus Bouchard, chief technology officer, Omtool, Ltd. “Real-time fax over IP is an important technology because it gives users real-time fax delivery and confirmation, the same level of confirmation they get from their traditional PSTN-based fax.”
