2/10/2004 - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTEC), the company driving the global core system software standard in PC systems and connected digital devices for 25 years, and Network Associates, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, announced they have expanded their partnership to deliver comprehensive security protection and services at the PC core. Phoenix will integrate the McAfee Personal Firewall Plus online managed service to the Phoenix Core Managed Environment (cMETM) Console for worldwide distribution.
Beginning late last year, Phoenix has been making Phoenix cME Console with McAfee® VirusScan® available to its major OEM and system builder customers. For PC users, the firewall product will deliver greater protection against malicious code attacks and security threats. Phoenix cME Console with McAfee VirusScan and McAfee Personal Firewall Plus will begin shipping later this quarter.
"Through this partnership, Phoenix is allowing its OEM and system builder customers to add a more comprehensive layer of security for users," said Todd Gebhart, vice president with the McAfee System Security group at Network Associates®. "Network Associates McAfee online managed security services offer business continuity, helping to protect users against malicious code attacks such as viruses, Trojans and worms, as well as unauthorized access, hacks and denial of service attacks."
Under the terms of this expanded worldwide business partnership, Phoenix will provide OEMs and systems builders a 30-day trial subscription of Network Associates' industry leading McAfee VirusScan and McAfee Personal Firewall Plus online managed services. The Network Associates McAfee products will be bundled with Phoenix cME Console and reside within Phoenix FirstWare® Vault in a highly secure area of the hard drive. With the Network Associates McAfee service residing on the Phoenix cME platform, Phoenix allows OEMs and system builders to add value to their products, providing their customers market-leading security capabilities to protect against evolving security threats.
"When they are bundled with Phoenix cME, the Network Associates McAfee managed security services enhance user productivity," said Michael Goldgof, vice president of Corporate Marketing and Products Division for Phoenix. "This is especially vital now that PCs are increasingly networked, making them much more vulnerable to hostile attacks. The security technologies offered by our two companies will deliver integrated protection that's built into the core of the machine."
According to mi2g Intelligence Unit, a digital risk firm, the Mydoom virus caused $22.6 billion in worldwide economic damage within 72 hours after it first appeared. It is regarded as the fastest spreading malware ever. The company measures economic damage in terms of business loss, bandwidth clogging, productivity erosion, management time reallocation, and recovery costs. Mi2g said that Mydoom has surpassed last year's Sobig virus as the worst of all time, so far causing more than $38.5 billion in economic damage. Analysts said the worm highlighted the Internet's vulnerability to infections that allow affected computers to be controlled for hacker attacks. Negative effects of these attacks can go on for years. The Code Red worm broke loose in July 2001, but it still searches the Internet for more computers to attack.
Network Associates McAfee Personal Firewall Plus is a comprehensive online managed firewall service that blocks unauthorized access and known hacks, forming a barrier between critical business data and malicious attacks from intruders. McAfee VirusScan provides anti-virus protection in an online service that detects infected files and automatically cleans, quarantines or deletes them to help ensure the computer is protected. Both services are managed around the clock by Network Associates and provide automated updates to all users to help protect against the latest security threats.
Network Associates is a member of the Phoenix Trusted Partner Network program, which provides independent software vendors (ISVs) and channel and technology partners a profitable program to seamlessly integrate their solutions with Phoenix offerings and to expand their market reach.
