2/10/2004 - Fulcrum Connections, a provider of complete gas connection services to Transco, can now support a flexible, remote workforce while ensuring full data security, thanks to a new broadband managed service supplied by Fujitsu Services. This allows many of its 1,200 employees to have ready access to essential data, including e-mail, project files, customer records and the employee Intranet from different locations, not just the Area Office.
Unlike Internet based Broadband services, the Fujitsu managed broadband service is private and connects directly to a Fujitsu data centre, avoiding the inherent vulnerability of an Internet based connection. Fulcrum Connections can now implement new IT systems that exploit the increased speed and superior security of the broadband service.
Staff in 40 regional depots and home workers are seeing the benefits of improved access to their IT services and field specialists across the UK no longer need to use a paper-based system as they can now submit their site surveys from home.
The broadband connection is part of a comprehensive managed service including helpdesk services that provide expert advice and assistance for Fulcrum’s staff. Fujitsu’s service also includes Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN) and telephone network services for Fulcrum.
Phil Harper, IS manager, Fulcrum Connections, said, “The broadband managed service allows our staff to gain speedy access to important data, without presenting a security risk. Working with Fujitsu, the complexity of managing secure remote access is handled by them, allowing our IT department to focus on adding value to the business. This service is a key enabler for us rolling out our new strategic IT systems and getting more business out of our depots around the country. This is fundamental for the productivity of the business.”
Alan Goswell, head of network strategy, Fujitsu Services, commented, “We have been able to combine the benefits of broadband access with the security and simplicity of a managed service and provide this to Fulcrum at the fraction of the cost of a leased line.”
