Fujitsu, Vodafone Create First Pay-Per-Month Wireless Laptop Package

2/2/2004 - Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European computer company, and Vodafone UK launches CONNECT2AIR packages, first-of-its-kind wireless computing packages1 that offer small businesses a radically new way to purchase IT. For the first time, businesses will be able to purchase wireless laptops or Tablet laptop PCs in a similar way to how they purchase mobile phones. This makes it easier and more affordable for businesses to take advantage of the productivity and flexible working benefits of wireless computing2 without negative impacts on cashflow.

CONNECT2AIR packages include:

  1. A fully wireless-enabled Fujitsu Siemens Computers LIFEBOOK laptop or tablet PC with Intel® CentrinoTM mobile technology for £99 (normal list price of between £1,139 and £1,478)3
  2. And a monthly contract for a minimum period of 24 months, starting from £89 per month:

New research from Fujitsu Siemens Computers reveals that four in five (77 percent) owners of Britain’s smallest businesses rate maintaining positive cashflow as the most pressing issue for their business. Owing to its low purchase price and monthly contract structure, CONNECT2AIR packages provide small businesses with a cost-effective and simple way to work wirelessly, without crippling the balance sheet.

Dave Cullinane, managing director, Fujitsu Siemens Computers UK & Ireland, said: “Cashflow has always been a critical problem for small businesses and it can often be the fine line between success and failure. Our research shows that more than half of small business owners understand the benefits of mobile working, but to date the expense and complexity have prevented them from taking advantage. By learning from the way people buy and use technology from the mobile phone industry, CONNECT2AIR packages allow small businesses to look after their cashflow without being left behind by technology advances.”

CONNECT2AIR packages offer total connectivity via the Vodafone GPRS network. Furthermore, with Intel Centrino mobile technology’s integrated wireless LAN capabilities, customers will also benefit from the ability to access public wireless hotspots, which can be found in ever increasing numbers in many areas such as hotels, airports and cafes**. This means that users can continue sending emails, accessing company networks and the internet either from a WiFi Hotspot5 or by switching to GPRS while away from the office, home or hotspot.

The Vodafone GPRS Mobile Connect Card is part of each CONNECT2AIR package and offers a mobile remote working solution. The card simply slots into the side of the LIFEBOOK laptop and the unique onscreen dashboard is displayed. This provides information on network performance and enables additional services such as SMS, VPN and Internet access to be used from all over the world6.

Mark Bond, Head of Business Marketing, Vodafone UK, said, “Small and mid-sized businesses experience unique challenges. Keeping control of costs whilst keeping on top of business is of paramount importance. The announcement with Fujitsu-Siemens means that we can provide customers with a total remote access package that is easy to use and cost-effective.”

In addition, Microsoft Office applications are factory-installed on the laptop, so that users can simply turn it on and begin work. The LIFEBOOK tablet laptop package also includes Microsoft OneNote, which complements the Office suite with a range of pen-enabled and audio-enabled facilities.

Mark Boulding, IT Analyst, Quocirca, said, “By offering a single solution, managed laptop with GPRS and WiFi mobile data coverage, Fujitsu Siemens Computers gives businesses the opportunity to make the most of the mobile workforce. Solutions such as CONNECT2AIR address the budgetary concerns of small businesses around mobile data usage in an increasingly fragmented market. They also shield users from the problems of managing this mix of essential IT components.”

**Important Information: Wireless connectivity and some features may require you to purchase additional software, services or external hardware. Availability of public wireless LAN access points is limited.
