Sun, Cadence, and VEDA IIT Set up VLSI Engineering Centre in India

12/24/2004 - Sun Microsystems Inc., Cadence and VEDA IIT, a premier institute in VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) Engineering in India, have announced a joint initiative to build the nation’s first nodal Center of Competency for Research and Development in VLSI Engineering, Design Automation and Embedded System Engineering. The VEDA IIT CoC together with its supporting partners aim to arm students with up-to-date academic skills and provide hands on experience in all VLSI design and engineering functions, including test to scale top level VLSI engineering challenges.

Located in Hyderabad, this centre will be based on Sun's leading Grid infrastructure technologies and State of art EDA tools that will enable a variety of industry and business partners in and around India to use and evaluate Grid, distributed management and portal technologies through a series of projects. The center will also become a source for Sun “Reference Architecture” in the areas of VLSI Design Engineering. Further, the Sun-Cadence-VEDA IIT collaboration aims to offer sponsorship to research students as a part of the initiative.

The Centre of Competency (CoC) is a premium program of Sun Microsystems, currently offered to select few institutes such as the Aachen University, University of Washington and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore. As a part of this initiative, Sun Microsystems will provide Grid computing, open, scalable and commercially viable Grid and HPC solutions for the advancement of training and research in VLSI technology. The Electronic design automation leader, Cadence has agreed to grant access to their world-class tools for instruction and academic research for future engineers joining the Institute. VEDA has proven design flows and methodologies, which lead to first time Silicon Success and has a resource pool of talented students with M.S in VLSI Engineering.

There is a remarkable growth in semiconductor businesses globally leading to an increase in demand for talented engineers in this sector and VEDA IIT is keen to tap and educate young engineers to take advantage of this emerging opportunity. “By establishing the first nodal VLSI CoC in India with Sun Microsystems and Cadence, we are reinforcing VEDA IIT’s vision of providing world class VLSI education facility in India,” said Dasaradha R Gude, Chairman, VEDA IIT. “The inclusion of advanced Grid technology resources in this Institute will facilitate solving new scientific challenges and efficient ways of performing chip design activities such as logic design and physical design of complex chips.” “Grid technology is the key enabler of this century's IT revolution and we're delighted to be a part of this pioneering initiative. This centre will provide first-of-its-kind grid computing resources, which can be accessed by interested companies over the web with appropriate permissions, ” added Prof. K Subbarangaiah, Hon. Director of VEDA IIT.

“Promoting this Center of Competency is a testament to VEDA IIT's leadership in VLSI Engineering and reiterates Sun's commitment to creating reliable and proven Grid and HPC computing solutions for VLSI Engineering knowledge center,” says Andrew Lim, Regional Director, Asia South, for Education and Research, Sun Microsystems.

In its role as technology partner Locuz was one of the key drivers in giving shape to this idea to develop the CoC. Commenting on the initiative, Uttam Majumdar, Vice President, Locuz, said, “VEDA is a great example of strong Industry – Academia partnership and we are pleased to associate with a visionary like Dr. Gude. For Locuz this is yet another opportunity to broaden its commitment to encourage growth of specialized education for research and development of engineering expertise.”

“Cadence is deeply committed to supporting VLSI education in India, as demonstrated by our ongoing expansion of our University Software Program. Cadence and VEDA have a long relationship and we are extremely happy to support this Centre of Competency. This is a great example of industry-academia synergy”, said Himanshu Singh, Executive Director (India & SAARC), Cadence Design Systems (I) Pvt. Ltd.

The CoC environment consists of Sun compute tier, namely V20Z Compute Grid Rack System with Grid master, with 32 nodes which will be located and centrally managed at VEDA IIT to enable the approved companies, academic and research collaborators to utilize the systems and participate in research efforts. This includes Distributed Resource Management (Sun Grid Engine) software for optimizing compute resources, Access Tier, Portal & Sun Ray Server; front-end Client tier with Sun Rays, WITH 3 TB of Storage on Sun 5210 Network Attached Storage (NAS) & LTO for backup.

VEDA IIT (VLSI Engineering and Design Automation Institute of Information technology) is one of the foremost premier institutes in VLSI engineering in India. It was established in 1997. As an MOU partner of JNTU it offers industry driven and industry participated, first-of-its-kind MS program in VLSI Engineering in collaboration with consortium of VLSI companies. VEDA IIT has been producing highly professional and competitive Engineers by infusing great quality and content into the curriculum and educating the students with appropriate skills suitable for rapidly changing industrial scenario in the fields of VLSI design and Embedded System Design. Through tie-ups with industry, Students find 100% employment. VEDA IIT's goal is to provide best quality Industry Oriented Education and Training in the areas of VLSI and Embedded System Design and to carryout or assist R & D activity for Industry. VEDA IITs goal is being achieved through a range of activities spanning post graduate and advanced training programs, UG and PG student project works, service provision, industrial affiliation and participation in government collaborations.
