Adaptec Rolls Out New Release of Snap Server 4500 in 1U Form Factor

12/15/2004 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a leader in storage solutions, announced a new 1.6TB version of the Snap Server 4500 - one of the company's top-selling storage systems for small/medium businesses (SMBs), remote offices, and departments. The Snap Server 4500 combines network-attached storage (NAS) and IP Storage Area Network (IP SAN) functionality in a single, and easy-to-deploy and maintain platform that is now available with improved performance and best-in-class storage capacity. For Rincon Research Corp., Citadel Security Software, and the University of Iowa, the Snap Server 4500 means reduced backup windows, improved performance, and significant cost savings over any other competitive storage solution.

When Tucson, Arizona-based Rincon Research, a leader in digital signal processing (DSP) application research and development, needed a better backup solution than tape, several SAN and NAS solutions were considered with capacity ranging from 500GB to 1TB, and price points from $80,000 to $160,000.

"When we realized we could get 750GB of RAID 5 storage for less than $5,000, it blew a hole in the SAN thing," said Doug Wellington, computer systems manager at Rincon. "We got two Snap Servers for $10,000 vs. $160,000 for the same storage capacity from other vendors. It was a no-brainer. For us, Snap Servers are the perfect combination of price, performance, and low maintenance."

Citadel Security Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDSS) of Dallas, Texas considered several offerings before standardizing on Snap Server 4500s for its backup operations and IP SAN. Now, Citadel's backups run 20 percent faster while they're saving money on server acquisition costs and ongoing maintenance.

"The Snap Server 4500 is literally plug and play," said Scott Millis, director of technology support at Citadel. "This is not our typical experience with a network storage solution. With Snap Servers, we never need to think about them. They do what they are supposed to do. We haven't had one trouble call yet."

The University of Iowa's (UI) Division of Continuing Education delivers online and on-campus courses, conferences, and workshops through three web sites that are accessed by thousands of people 24x7. Director of Technology, Cordell Jeppson, can't afford to manage something complex that will break down when there is no one at the physical location. After an in-house, side-by-side product comparison, UI chose two Snap Server 4500s - one for primary storage and one for disaster recovery. He uses Adaptec's Server-to-Server (S2S) Synchronization software to replicate data between the primary and backup 4500s each day.

"What sold us on Adaptec's Snap Server 4500 was the throughput comparison, it was 225 percent better than the competition," said Jeppson. "The 4500 is slick. It also consumes a third of the power of its competition. I can get 80 minutes of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) off a regular server if there is a power outage, while the 4500 on the same UPS lasts over four hours. They are the last units to go out, which means we don't have to spend money on elaborate power protection schemes." Jeppson continued, "The Snap Server 4500s let us save money and expand our capabilities. Now, with the new 1.6TB capacity level, we can get even more done with less money."

About the Snap Server 4500
The Snap Server 4500 is available today starting at a U.S. manufacturer's suggested list price (MSRP) of $4,595 for the 1TB configuration and $5,995 for the new 1.6 TB configuration. It offers best in class storage expandability, 60 percent more than its closest major competitor, and can scale up to 3.6 TB through the addition of up to two Snap Disk 10 expansion arrays. The Snap Server 4500 comes with integrated, best-of-breed software including NetVault backup software from Bakbone, anti-virus, snapshot, and centralized management software. The Instant Capacity Expansion (I.C.E.) software feature allows customers to dynamically increase the size of data volumes without interrupting user's access to the Snap Server 4500. Also available for the Snap Server 4500 is the new Snap EDR or S2S software for advanced data protection, consolidation, distribution, and replication.
