Multi-Tech Creates Smallest Complete Modem for Embedded Designs

12/10/2004 - Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading telecommunications and data communications technology company based in suburban Minneapolis, announces a new line of embedded modems. The company believes that the new RJModem family represents the first and smallest (2 1/2" 3/4" 11/16") embedded single modem chip products encompassing all associated modem hardware including the RJ11 connector. The RJModem family allows design engineers to add modem communications to non-PC applications simply and efficiently by adding a single component. The RJModem represents the latest in modem technology and is available in six versions for V.32bis, V.34 and V.92 speeds with models for either 3- or 5-volt power requirements. Shipping next month, RJModems are available in OEM packs of 50.

"The trend in embedded analog modem design has been to keep adding functionality to a single package to make the addition of data communications progressively easier for the design engineer," claims Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "With our new RJModem family we have completed the cycle by including everything needed in one small package. The RJModem can be board mounted or off-board panel mounted using Multi-Tech's innovative panel mount kit. Along with the total modem design comes Multi-Tech's global modem tradition. Simply stated, a global modem means one modem for worldwide use. The RJModem is designed for worldwide applications with approvals in over 40 countries. That means one SKU (stock keeping unit) can ship virtually anywhere in the world, which benefits the designers, their distribution channels and multinational corporate users. A global modem, like the RJModem takes the guesswork out of the ordering process up and down the design and distribution chain."

There are six models of the RJModem family (Model MT565RJ11-xx): one for each combination of the three modem standards (V.92, V.34 and V.32bis) and available voltages (3 or 5 volt). For data communications, the V.92 models of the RJModem modem can receive data from a digital source using a V.92-compatible central site modem at line speeds up to 56 kbps. With its PCM upstream enabled, data transmissions support sending data at speeds up to 48 kpbs. With PCM upstream disabled and dictated by line conditions, upstream data uses V.34 modes and speeds. The modems feature Quick connect (POS applications), V.44 compression, V.80 Synchronous Access Mode (SAM) for video conferencing, and voice pass-through. The V.34 and V.32bis models of the RJModem modem follow all appropriate conventions for those standards of operation.
