Curtiss-Wright Controls Unveils Sentric COTS Digital Screen Recorder

12/8/2004 - Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC) has announced Sentric, a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), real-time digital high-resolution screen recorder, which is available as a self-contained rack-mount, desktop or single width VME card solution.

The Sentric disk-based screen recorder captures, compresses and digitally stores, at a maximum resolution of 1600 x1200, up to 4 channels of RGB video, TV video, audio and discrete events. Sentric is designed for specialized training and simulation, command and control, mission analysis, air traffic control and other applications requiring real-time high-resolution recording.

"Unlike software-based screen recorders, Sentric records exactly what the operator sees on the display - unobtrusively, reliably and accurately," says Darwin Beckel President, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing Subsystems Solutions, Cambridge facility. "This capability has been sadly lacking in the COTS market but with Sentric customers now have a cost-effective all digital solution to high fidelity recording of the fine detail of a high-resolution screen - available for the first time as a VME card level solution."

Sentric uses high-speed, high-reliability disk drives to store the compressed video and audio data. Replay can be either from the unit itself or via a standard desktop PC, allowing mission or incident analysis in any remote location. Sentric uses a combination of JPEG and JPEG-2000 compression schemes to provide high-quality recordings that can be replayed on standard PCs using supplied replay software. An optional PCI decompression accelerator is available to provide real-time replay of TV video.

Sentric is supplied as a box-level product with integral SCSI disks, or as a VME card for integration into a customer's own chassis. The VME solution is likely to be popular for military command and control systems as it can be easily and economically integrated into the existing consoles. Sentric VME is a complete recording system with on-board processor and network interface, requiring only the addition of an external disk drive to form a stand-alone system.

Sentric is the latest product from CWCEC's operation in Cambridge, England (formerly Primagraphics), which specializes in developing radar, video and graphics display systems for military and civil applications. Its systems, for VME, PCI, CompactPCI and PMC formats, are in use throughout the world for airborne and shipborne command and control consoles, vessel tracking, air traffic control and air defense systems.

Details of the range of cards and systems solutions are given on CWCEC's web site at For more information please contact CWCEC, New Cambridge House, Litlington, Royston, Herts SG8 0SS, United Kingdom, telephone +44 (0) 1763 852222 or email
