Kontron Unveils JRex-CE 3.5 SBC with Intel Celeron and USB 2.0

12/7/2004 - JRex-CE is Kontron's newest 3.5" board and comes equipped with Intel® ULV Celeron® processors from 400 MHz to 1 GHz. The JRex-CE is the first available Intel® Celeron® based 3.5" SBC which also supports USB 2.0 with a full 480 MBit/s. Communication with peripheral devices is thus up to 40 times faster than with USB 1.1.

All other manufacturers of every form factor offer only USB 1.1 for these processors so far, because the standard Intel chipset does not support USB 2.0. Nevertheless, in the JRex-CE, Kontron exclusively uses Intel chips, which are, for the first time, comparable in price with VIA Eden-based boards. The board is thus a genuine alternative for price-sensitive applications. At 400 MHz, the JRex-CE is fanless and, as a result, not only extremely quiet, but also energy-saving. The 733 MHz and 1000 MHz versions are equipped with active fans.

The JRex-CE is equipped with the Intel 815 chipset ICH4, which is specifically designed for embedded systems, in order to optimize performance, flexibility and stability. Furthermore, the board is equipped with RAM of up to 512 MByte SDRAM-DIMM. CRT and LCD support with 2x 24Bit LVDS is ensured by Intel Graphics with up to 32 MByte graphics memory, integrated on the chipset.

Thanks to the implemented TTL interface, the system can optionally be equipped with, for example, a touch panel or GPS functions. Peripheral devices are connected via 10/100-BaseT Ethernet, a parallel port and two USB 2.0 ports. Storage media can be connected robustly via CompactFlash sockets, or with high performance via an EIDE interface UDMA-100. Four general purpose I/O interfaces are also available, offering additional flexibility for system developers. Additional peripherals can be connected via the wireless JFLEX expansion interfaces.
