EPI Unveils Third Generation of MAJIC Intelligent JTAG Debug Probes

12/3/2004 - Embedded Performance, Inc. (EPI) introduced the third generation of its MAJIC® Series intelligent JTAG debug probes. The new product line continues to support hundreds of ARM®, Intel XScale® and MIPS® devices and adds a new price point for cost-sensitive programs based on the Linux OS and GNU software development tools.

The new product lineup includes:

  • MAJIC-LT - Targets the price sensitive buyer; includes the OpenDebugTM software for GDB.
  • MAJIC-LX - Targets single core debugging (with other devices on same scan chain) and includes EPI's OpenDebugTM software for the full range of OS and debug environments supported by EPI:
    • Any Linux/GDB
    • ARM and ARM third party compatible debuggers
    • MIPS third party debuggers
    • Intel C++ Software Development Tool Suite
    • Win CE Platform Builder hardware assisted debug
  • MAJIC-MT - Includes all the MAJIC-LX capabilities above and adds:
    • concurrent multi-session, multi-core debug support
    • execution tracing for processors with on-chip trace buffers (e.g. Intel XScale microarchitecture) that upload trace data from the on-chip buffer over JTAG
  • MAJIC-PLUS - Features all of the capabilities described above plus an internal 512K trace frame buffer to support ARM devices that use the Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) and MIPS EJTAG 2.0 devices that use PCTrace.

EPI's MAJIC® Series provides the industry's broadest range of intelligent debug probes targeting the ARM®, Intel XScale® and MIPS® microarchitectures. All members of the MAJIC® family feature 10/100BaseT Fast Ethernet and improved software download speed. The -LT, -LX and -MT versions incorporate improved protection from incorrect power supply usage and the -LX and -MT include target power autosense to measure the actual target voltage and then drive the target JTAG connection at that voltage.

All EPI MAJIC® Series probes include:

  • Preconfigured start-up files
  • Preconfigured target files
  • Flash programming utilities
  • The MAJIC Setup Wizard

In addition to the EPI OpenDebugTM interface software for the industry's best tools, all MAJIC® Series probes are directly supported by EPI's world-class EDB C source level debugger. EDB is widely used to complement GDB or Platform Builder for board bring-up, memory testing and automated test program generation, driver development (hardware breakpoint support), BSP development and Flash programming.

"Only EPI offers comprehensive OpenDebugTM support for the full breadth of industry standard tools so designers can 'have it their way' to support their investment in code. In addition, EPI provides the complementary capabilities of EDB for hardware platform development, software debug and the addition of execution trace support. Multiple tools choices reduce program schedule risk, and enhance the probability of meeting tight schedules," claimed Lyle Pittroff, VP of marketing at EPI.
