Personalized and entertainment applications are set to be the next big drivers for mobile services revenue. In this iForum, Yankee Group Senior Analyst Matt Hatton provides an overview of the mobile entertainment market and discusses real-world mobile operator strategies for successful content-based services. Hatton also examines the role that 3G networks and handset features play in mobile entertainment services, as well as the barriers to deployment and adoption that still remain including the challenge of content and subscriber management.

Drawing on lessons learned from ringback tones, in the second part of the program, Brian Demers, NMS VP of Mobile Applications examines service architectures for mobile entertainment. Demers also presents a new approach to mobile entertainment services centered on a satisfying user experience and exactly what that means for different user segments. The iForum concludes with an examination of the requirement to efficiently and quickly manage and deliver innovative entertainment and peer-to-peer services through consolidation of multiple content sources into a single intelligent content, subscriber data, and application framework.

NMS has a history of providing platforms for the early commercial implementations of ringback tone services, most recently to Vodafone Netherlands, the first telecom provider in the Netherlands to introduce its customers to ringback tones. In November 2002, NMS announced the world's first ringback tone service, deployed by SK Telecom and built using NMS system building blocks. Other Asia Pacific operators like ChungHwa Telecom and HKCSL, were quick to follow. Today, mobile phone subscribers in most countries in Asia have access to the service, driving upwards of $40 million in service revenues every month.
