11/18/2004 - UbiNetics and Renesas Technology Corp. have signed an agreement for the development of the first RF solution capable of supporting WCDMA and HSDPA in the frequency bands used in Japan, Europe and the USA.
The new RF solution, jointly developed by UbiNetics and Renesas Technology, will be a complete, dual-mode RF sub-system comprising RFIC, power amplifier, SAW duplexer and DC/DC converter. It will support WCDMA and HSDPA operation in the 800 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands used in Europe, the US and Japan and is designed to be used with Renesas' quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE solutions for dual-mode applications.
The announcement marks the second time UbiNetics and Renesas Technology have partnered for joint RF solution development, emphasising both companies' confidence that their partnership results in world-beating solutions. Under the terms of the first agreement, signed in September 2002, UbiNetics and Hitachi, Ltd. jointly designed a WCDMA RFIC.
"UbiNetics is unique in already having HSDPA solutions in the market place today," said Yutaka Tanaka, Department Manager of System Solution Business Unit 2 at Renesas Technology Corp. "UbiNetics' 3G systems expertise and HSDPA experience is an ideal complement to Renesas' world-leading RF technology. Working together, we are able to bring to market highly flexible and power efficient RF solutions to meet the needs of the world's handset developers," Tanaka added.
Bjorn Krylander, CEO of UbiNetics said: "It is clear that Japan and the US are at the forefront of the HSDPA roll-out. Renesas' new world-leading RF solution supporting the Japanese, European and US frequency bands will be an ideal choice for handset manufacturers looking for a cost-effective solution to address global markets."
UbiNetics is the world leader in the supply of innovative 3G, 2.5G and 2G (WCDMA/GPRS/GSM) IP solutions for chipset and terminal manufacturers, and 3G Test and Measurement equipment. Its experience in wireless technology positions the company at the centre of 3G developments.
The company's WCDMA Test Mobiles, used by global 3G infrastructure manufacturers and network operators, position UbiNetics at the centre of WCDMA interoperability testing. Products such as the SystemAT test system for network and service verification and the TM500 Test Mobile, now being supplied for early HSDPA trials, further strengthen this position.
UbiNetics also provides 2G, 2.5G, 3G and HSDPA protocol software and physical layer IP for use by chipset and handset developers and manufacturers. ODMs can take advantage of UbiNetics' embedded modules and reference designs for 3G-enabled handsets. Using UbiNetics' considerable experience in deploying multi-mode 3G technology, chip and device manufacturers can de-risk and accelerate their product developments.
Since the company was formed in 1999, UbiNetics has grown to over 400 employees with operations in Cambridge, UK, Japan and Hong Kong, with R&D facilities in Swindon, UK, Bangalore, India and Shenzhen, China.
