HP Standardizes on Broadcom's PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller

11/5/2004 - Broadcom Corporation, a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, announced that its NetXtremeTM BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controller is now shipping as a standard offering within all new PCI ExpressTM-based HP business desktop computers.

The first company to launch a PCI Express GbE controller, Broadcom continues to provide time-to-market advantages to its customers. As a result, leading Tier 1 PC manufacturers incorporating PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet have chosen Broadcom® NetXtreme PCI Express GbE controllers for inclusion within their latest business PCs. This is based on advanced PCI Express capabilities, features, reliability, performance and the widespread acceptance of the NetXtreme controller family within the business enterprise today.

Today's IT managers demand stability and predictability in their networks, resisting unproven network connection solutions. NetXtreme controllers provide the field-proven reliability of the most widely deployed Gigabit Ethernet controllers in the industry. The NetXtreme product line continues to win designs based on Broadcom's innovation and commitment to product execution. This is evidenced by a recent IDC report that attributes Broadcom's leadership in Ethernet semiconductor revenues to its success in securing GbE design wins with Tier 1 PC OEM customers. Additionally, the NetXtreme controller family recently captured the worldwide market share leadership in GbE controller shipments, according to market research groups IDC and Dell'Oro.

The BCM5751 PCI Express-based GbE controller is now included as a standard offering within the HP Compaq 7000 series of business desktop PCs (including the dc7100 small form factor, dc7100 convertible mini-tower and dc7100 ultra slim desktop PCs). In addition, Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5782 and BCM5705M PCI-based GbE controllers are deployed in HP's existing family of business PCs, including the HP d530 and d330 business desktops, as well as its Compaq Evo line of business notebooks.

The BCM5751 is the industry's first PCI Express-based Gigabit Ethernet controller. The PCI Express standard is a natural evolution of the ubiquitous PCI bus architecture. It replaces the parallel bus structure of PCI with a serial 2.5 GHz bus. Its low pin count enables a new generation of smaller form factor computing devices, while its improved speed reduces the bottlenecks typically associated with the legacy 32-bit parallel PCI bus.

"We are pleased that after a very thorough evaluation, HP selected Broadcom for its PCI Express GbE technology and chose to continue offering the Broadcom NetXtreme family as a standard for this year's integrated network solution," said Greg Young, Senior Director and General Manager for Broadcom's High Speed Controller Line of Business. "HP's selection of our BCM5751 reinforces the strength of Broadcom's strategy of both investing in breakthrough technologies and partnering with industry leaders to deliver first-to-market solutions."

"HP is committed to offering the latest industry standard technologies that benefit our customers through more secure and manageable solutions that deliver the best return on their IT investment," said Jeff Groudan, Vice President of HP's PSG Product Marketing. "Our selection of Broadcom's NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet controllers for the new dc7000 desktop series gives customers the ability to invest in high performance, reliable technology that meets their immediate and future bandwidth demands, maximizing the customers' return on investment."

Availability and Pricing
The BCM5751 is currently available and utilizes a 15 mm x 15 mm, 196-pin package. Pricing is available upon request.
