Sleepycat Software Opens Offices in UK to Expand into European Market

11/4/2004 - Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB, launched Sleepycat Europe with offices based in the United Kingdom. European companies are rapidly turning to open source software for commercial deployments and seeking local support services. IT analyst firm, IDC predicts that Western European organizations will spend $98 million on open source software IT services in 2004, increasing expenditures by 233% over the next four years to $228 million by 2008.

"The European market is showing huge demand for Berkeley DB, a clear category leader in many industries such as telecommunications," said Adrian Jones, Managing Director of Sleepycat Europe. "Europeans appreciate the value of open source software and welcome the security and support of working with Berkeley DB under a commercial licence. From our office in the U.K., we'll be able to better service to customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa."

"Since Berkeley DB is a key component for several of our mobile infrastructure products, we will value the availability of local support," said Aram Krol, Business Development Manager for EMEA at LogicaCMG, the U.K.-based leader in IT services and wireless telecoms with 20,000 staff and offices in 34 countries.

Sleepycat's presence in Europe already includes customers such as Ericsson, Alcatel, Marconi, IONA, British Telecom, Amdocs, Microgen, Isode, Avellino, bmd wireless, and many others.

"We've brought together a strong team of industry veterans in Europe and are fully committed to providing the best service and support in Europe, a strategic market for Sleepycat," said Mike Olson, CEO of Sleepycat Software.

Berkeley DB provides fast, scalable, reliable and cost-effective data storage services for developers building mission-critical applications. Berkeley DB is schema neutral and links directly with the application, so programmers can store and retrieve information quickly and easily. It supports ACID transactions, recovery and replication for fault tolerance and high availability.

Berkeley DB is distributed under a dual licence. An open source licence is available for open source and internal use projects. A commercial licence is available for redistributing Berkeley DB within proprietary products. Sleepycat also provides world-class support, consulting and training services.
