10/29/2004 - Co-Line Welding, of Sully, Iowa, has selected Intermec’s EasyADC System to automate its inventory management, shipping and receiving processes. EasyADC is a turnkey system of Intermec automatic data collection hardware, software and services designed specifically to help small-to-mid-sized companies automate inventory management, shipping and receiving and other key business processes.
Co-Line specializes in welding, metal stamping, 3-D laser cutting and machining. Although many of its high-volume incoming raw materials arrive with bar codes already attached, the company had been using a manual, paper-based process to keep track of inventory. Co-Line’s goal was to incorporate the business benefits of automatic data collection with its existing Microsoft Great Plains enterprise resource planning system.
Working with Microsoft Business Solutions provider RSM McGladrey, Co-Line explored options for adding bar code data collection to its operations.
“We needed an affordable way to get started with automated data collection,” said Faye Brand, operations and accounting manager for Co-Line. “We knew we could gain efficiencies in our production processes, but we wanted to be able to control how much of the data collection system we implemented at any one time.”
“We recommended Intermec’s EasyADC System,” said Brenda Niblo, manager, RSM McGladrey. “It seemed like the best fit for Co-Line, due to the size of the system, its low cost, and its integration with Great Plains.”
RSM McGladrey worked with Co-Line to install EasyADC in just two days, with virtually no disruption to its business processes.
“Initially, we thought we’d need a start-to-finish system, but EasyADC allows us to implement data collection in specific areas of the business as we need it,” Brand said.
Co-Line now scans raw material such as coiled steel at receiving and moves it into inventory. From there, the material is scanned again to track its movement into production, automatically updating inventory levels in real time. The next step is to implement bar code data collection for shipping operations.
“The system will be able to verify that a shipment is complete, or if an item has been loaded onto a delivery vehicle that is not part of the order,” Brand said. “We expect to increase shipment accuracy and gain efficiency by reducing the number of manual processes used to manage shipping, receiving and inventory.”
